Men's Wearhouse Fires Founder and Spokesman

Men's Wearhouse fired executive chairman and spokesman George Zimmer, The Associated Press reports. In addition to his role in helping the company become one of North America's largest men's clothier's, Zimmer was also known for appearing in many TV commercials saying, "You're going to like the way you look. I guarantee it."

Men's Wearhouse did not give a reason for the firing, but according to Zimmer he and the board of directors have had a share of disagreements over the past several months.

"Over the last 40 years, I have built The Men's Wearhouse into a multi-billion dollar company with amazing employees and loyal customers who value the products and service they receive at The Men's Wearhouse," Zimmer said in a statement.

He added that, "instead of fostering the kind of dialogue in the boardroom that has, in part, contributed to our success, the board has inappropriately chosen to silence my concerns by terminating me as an executive officer."

I hope he saved his money from all those commercials. Besides, as a top executive he is more than likely to get a multi-million dollar golden parachute of a pension. So maybe they did him a favor.

His release may have came with a price. Their stock is shaky at this point. This is same statement as above only with stock information.

George Zimmerman is probably the only connection people have with Men's Warehouse. He is very closely connected with the brand. So firing Him seems like a bad move from a business point of view.

well, he was the founder - so it was his company, but not so much anymore...

- and apparently the company owns the founder's image, so they can keep using him in their ads all they want with the hundreds of hours of video they have of him, whereas he is technically not allowed to look like himself (as the founder) anymore.

The former face of Men's Wearhouse doesn't like the way the company looks, and he guarantees it in an recent interview with Fortune.

After being ousted from the company in June, founder George Zimmer slammed the board for its decision in an open letter. But he has been largely silent about the details of his abrupt departure since.

Breaking that silence for Fortune, Zimmer claimed the Men's Wearhouse board was "extremely harsh" to him, and that "they basically began throwing me out of my office."

"I got no severance," Zimmer told Fortune. "They even took my phone and cut off my insurance."

Zimmer opened the first Men's Wearhouse store in Houston in 1973 and oversaw the company's expansion to 1,143 locations and $2.48 billion in annual sales. Zimmer, with his signature tagline -- "You're going to like the way you look. I guarantee it" -- became an iconic figure in American advertising.

Zimmer said customers are deeply confused about why the public face of the company was tossed out.

"Hundreds of people, customers, have stopped me on the street to ask what happened. It's a very awkward situation for me, because they felt a connection," said Zimmer.

The founder also said that he's lost faith in the company he built from the ground up.

"It also seems to me that the company's culture is different," said Zimmer. "But the truth is that it's been drifting for several years."

Men's Wearhouse did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
