Elroy Schwartz, who wrote for Groucho Marx, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball, but was best known as a primary writer for “Gilligan’s Island,” died Friday at the Odyssey House in Palm Desert after complications from surgery. He was nine days shy of his 90th birthday. Schwartz, a long-time Palm Springs resident, was hired by his brother, Sherwood Schwartz, to write and edit “Gilligan’s Island” in 1964. He said the CBS show about castaways stranded after a three-hour cruise featured some of his best writing because, “They couldn’t believe you could get 30 episodes out of seven people stranded on an island.” Schwartz also wrote fiction and non-fiction books, painted and delved into past-life regressions. He was a licensed hypnotherapist who practiced in an office in Palm Springs but also entertained by inducing volunteer audience members back to earlier incarnations. His wide-ranging TV career included writing questions for the scandal-plagued “The $64,000 Question” and dramas such as “It Takes A Thief” and “The Six Million Dollar Man.” He also wrote material for the Marx quiz show, “You Bet Your Life.” No funeral services are planned for Schwartz. He is survived by his wife, Beryl; two daughters, Nan Schwartz and Jill Moramarco of Los Angeles, and one granddaughter.

I didn't realize he was that old, I knew he was Sherwood's brother, but I thought there was a bigger age difference. The family has a good blood line.
