The DvD business model is kind of on the way out, too. I'd be surprised if we saw anymore, unless they were specifically intended for the $5 bin at Wal-Mart and each DvD had 5-10 segments on it.
I think what is more likely to happen, and more likely the reason that the YouTube segments were pulled, is that C-M is readying a large number of episodes for release via iTunes and other similar services. I imagine each segment will be $0.99, with 3 related segments being $1.99, and maybe theme packs (10-15 related segments, ghosts, murders, etc.) being $9.99. I hope that all, or nearly all, of the segments will be released in this manner. Hopefully they'll offer a complete collection purchase of like $199.99 or something, so that they can all be purchased at a discount. This is probably the last hope for Unsolved Mysteries to be released in a widespread format. Once they've been up for purchase for 6 months to a year, they'll likely appear on other formats such as Netflix and Hulu. This would just increase exposure for the show, which would lead to more purchases on iTunes. I hope they release ALL of the Stack episodes and ALL of the Farina episodes. It would be cool to watch the Stack episode and then immediately watch the Farina episode afterwards to see the differences. If they release NONE of the Farina episodes I won't be heartbroken or anything (and I'm not a Farina hater, but the Stack episodes are historically important and what defined the show). For all we know, though, Unsolved Mysteries is still being produced and a new season is being prepared. Maybe the iTunes offerings will be released in conjunction with a new season so some cross-promotion can occur. |
