Default Canadian Fall TV Schedules and Highlights 2013-14

Here we go again! The Canadian TV networks are holding their upfronts this week to preview their fall schedules one week after the US networks did theirs. The CBC jumped the gun a bit by having their upfronts back on May 22 and we will start with them followed by Canada's other major networks with the various specialty and digital channels to come next week:

CBC

CBC will bring back virtually their entire lineup from last year including their main meal ticket "Hockey Night In Canada" which this time will deliver a full season beginning in October. The only new additions will be Canadian crime dramas "Cracked" and "Crossing Lines". An old favorite will also be coming back as "Battle Of The Blades" returns by popular demand Sundays at 8 and I can't wait! The contestants haven't been announced yet but it's sure to be an interesting and fun group!

CITY TV

Ever since their first year on the air back in 1972, CITY-TV has always been known to take risks and gamble on shows that may have been rejected by other networks in hopes that they would become hits. This strategy has paid off in recent years with shows like "2 Broke Girls", "New Girl", and "The Mindy Project". This season, CITY is again taking a big risk with a completely revamped schedule offering 10 new sitcoms and 7 new dramas. The best new sitcom would appear the be the new Robin Williams show "The Crazy Ones" which will be on Thursdays at 9:00 pm right after another potential new hit drama "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland". In a weird twist, CITY will also add both "Mom" and "Dads" to their lineup, but I wouldn't expect them to stay together for long. Other new sitcoms to watch for are "Brooklyn Nine Nine", "Super Fun Night", "Back In The Game", and Eva Longoria's new Web series on Hulu "Mother Up!" which Canadians can watch and follow on the CITY website when it debuts in midseason. Also of note, CITY will feature "Modern Family" in syndication for the first time weeknights at 7 and 7:30 pm.

GLOBAL

It's official! Global has won the lottery, or at least the TV equivalent of it. Last week at the US upfronts in LA, they outbid CTV and CITY for the Canadian rights to "The Michael J Fox Show". In a unique scheduling strategy, the show will not be simulcast with CBS's airtime of 9:30 on Thursday night as is very common with Canadian networks showing US series in prime time, which in Canada is from 6 pm to midnight. Instead, Global will show it a full night earlier, on Wednesdays at 9:30 pm. The Thursday slot is taken up by "Glee", one of Global's most popular series, which remains at 9 pm after following two new sitcoms "Welcome To The Family" and "The Millers" at 8 and 8:30 pm. The other new entry is "Sean Saves The World" which will air directly before Michael at 9 pm on Wednesdays. The rest of the prime time schedule is taken up by dramas, another season of "Survivor", and FOX's Sunday night animation lineup headed up as always by "The Simpsons".

Tomorrow: The reigning ratings champion CTV will have their upfront presentation. Full details to follow on this page.

CTV/CTV TWO

CTV is still Canada's #1 network and has dominated the ratings in recent years so it's not surprising that their new fall schedule doesn't contain many changes. The only new sitcoms that have been added are "The Goldbergs" and "Trophy Wife" which will be on Tuesdays at 9 and 9:30 pm after one of this season's most anticipated new dramas "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D". Other than that, its schedule remains intact from 2012 except for a few strategic moves. CTV's biggest reality hits from last season will now be moved to CTV Two, which will be the new home for "American Idol", "The Voice", "Dancing With The Stars", "Undercover Boss", and "The X Factor". CTV Two has also pulled off a rather stunning coup. Quoting from its official press release:

"CTV announced today it has acquired the syndication rights to hit series MIKE & MOLLY and HOT IN CLEVELAND, two exclusive strip comedies coming to Canada one year before the rest of the world.

Later in the evening, the MIKE & MOLLY and HOT IN CLEVELAND strips provide comedic counter-programming to 10 p.m. dramas on other networks
."

Now that is big news indeed and it bears repeating. CTV Two will have syndicated reruns of both "Mike & Molly" at 10 pm and "Hot In Cleveland" at 10:30 pm, six nights a week, from Tuesdays to Sundays. Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" will also be on six nights a week except for Saturdays. It's news like this that makes you realize why CTV is, and continues to be, Canada's #1 network.

Today I'll begin looking at the new schedules for the various specialty channels in Canada as news of the fall lineups begin trickling in. One thing I've noticed in the last few years that is in painful evidence again this season is that as the main networks get better, especially in prime time, the specialties get progressively worse every year. If you don't believe me, wait until you see CTS. First, I'll talk about another small channel that is about to celebrate a big milestone.

CHCH

CHCH-TV is an independent station operating out of Hamilton, Ontario that is about to celebrate their 60th anniversary on June 7, 2014, with year-long special programming and features set to mark the occasion beginning on New Year's Day. One of the highlights, which won't take effect until next summer, will be the return of an old fondly remembered favorite from the 1970s among Canadian kids from that era. CHCH will bring back a new version of "Tiny Talent Time" a children's talent show hosted by former CBC weatherman Bill Lawrence from 1957-1992. I don't expect the new version to be that great simply because the old show was so good but it should be worth seeing at least the first couple of times to see how everything's changed. (It would be like watching "The Mickey Mouse Club" with Britney Spears instead of Annette Funicello.) Debuting this fall will be a new Canadian game show "Spin Off" hosted by actress Elvira Kurt and produced by reality guru Mark Burnett as well as "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" with new host Cedric The Entertainer (or as I like to call him, Cedric the No-Talent-Bum!).

Press Release + 2013 Fall Schedule

Tiny Talent Time - 1985

Most of Canada's networks and specialty channels are owned by 3 large companies: Bell Canada, Rogers, and Shaw. The Shaw specialty channels are known for their limited variety in programming and their insistence on spreading out their shows over many different channels and repeating them several times a day. This fall, they'll have a new channel to play with. It will be called Dtour and it will be a general lifestyle channel, like we needed one of those, and it will replace and rebrand TVTropolis, which mainly shows sitcoms from the 1980s and 1990s. When it started, you may remember that it used to be called PRIME, and it was awesome. In its first week alone, PRIME would have stuff like "Hogan's Heroes", "Petticoat Junction", "McHale's Navy", and "The Beverly Hillbillies". I would kill for something like that again! I would expect that many of TVTropolis's programs would make their way onto DejaView to join their already modest schedule which doesn't promise to change too much this fall. Returning to DejaView this year will be "All In The Family", "The Jeffersons", "The Golden Girls", "Three's Company", and "MASH". That's pretty much all they've got!

DejaView - Fall 2013

CTS

And now, saving the worst for last, we have the Crossroads Television System, known commonly as CTS. If you're a fan of the classic family series that they've shown recently such as "Full House", "Fresh Prince", and "Mad About You", or you're like me and remember how great it was in its early days with shows like "Happy Days", "My Three Sons", and "Andy Griffith", prepare to be very, very disappointed. For starters, there are no sitcoms at all to be found in their new fall schedule. 'Gilmore Girls" and "West Wing" are coming back and joining them will be the following:

"Marie" --- a syndicated daily talk show hosted by Marie Osmond 4:00 pm

"Larry King Now" --- And I thought he was dead... 3:30 and 9:00 pm

"Family Feud" --- The Steve Harvey version to be seen back to back, as if once isn't enough! 5:00 and 5:30 pm

New Series Coming To CTS

Fall 2013 Schedule

I am really floored by all of this. I expected much better from them. I'll watch Marie because I've always loved her but everything else belongs in a toxic waste dump!

More to come soon....

Do you know Global is doing this, especially since it will cost them simultaneous substitution rights?

Thank you for the kind words but I'm afraid the good news will have to wait until at least another year.

Before I continue with the fall preview, I would like to repeat again for "InstallLSC" and anyone else who was wondering about it that Michael J Fox's new show will indeed be seen on Global on Wednesday nights at 9:30 pm one day earlier than NBC beginning Sept. 25. So if anyone needs spoiler alerts, ask me!

I'm sorry that it's been this long between news items except that many channels (in particular the Bell Canada owned specialty channels) have not announced their schedules until this week. So without taking up any more time, let's now focus on some of the key specialty and digital channels in Canada:

Comedy Gold

Comedy Gold is one of only two remaining Canadian digital channels that offer classic TV series from the 70s and 80s (the other being DejaView) but sadly not earlier than that, except for "I Love Lucy" . This fall, two new sitcoms will join the rotation: "Growing Pains" and "Wings". They will be joined by "The New Addams Family" and a game show called "Inside The Box" neither of which is bound to get anyone excited. The old mainstays are still there: Mary Tyler Moore, Rhoda, Lucy, both Bob Newhart shows, and Night Court to name a few. Unfortunately, so too is Super Dave, David Steinberg and "Full House".

Comedy Gold Fall 2013

The Comedy Network

The Comedy Network is similar to Comedy Gold except it specializes in showing more recent sitcoms. This fall will be no different as current prime time hit "Parks and Recreation" will hit syndication for the first time. Other notable sitcoms that will return to the schedule include "Seinfeld", "The Big Bang Theory", "Community", and "Corner Gas". Also returning is the new version of "Match Game" for a second season.

Comedy Network Fall 2013

MUCH

Also part of the Bell family is MuchMusic, now simply called Much. Like their US contemporary MTV, the channel is now featuring less music videos and more reality series and sitcoms. This fall, the sitcoms will be "Fresh Prince", "The Simpsons", "The Cleveland Show", and "South Park", which moves over from the Comedy Network along with many other US Comedy Central shows including "Tosh O", "Drunk History", and "The Jeselnik Offensive".

MUCH Fall 2013 Schedule

If these schedules don't impress you, that's nothing compared to the Canadian version of E! How bad is their schedule? Here's all you need to know: Saturdays from 11am to 6pm, E! will show 7 straight hours of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians"! Anyone who can sit through the whole thing deserves to be deported!

Another channel to take note of this fall is OMNI, which specializes in multicultural programming in many different languages. Their English shows will be highlighted by Arsenio Hall's comeback to late night TV as he joins the lineup at 10:00 pm. Sitcoms to watch for this fall will be "Rules Of Engagement", "30 Rock", "How I Met Your Mother", "Two and a Half Men", and on Sundays "Modern Family".

OMNI

Teletoon Retro

Normally at this point, I would usually say something like "And now saving the best for last, it's Teletoon Retro". I'll admit that while I still see Teletoon Retro as being a good station, to the point where it's now one of the few non-sports stations that I still watch on TV, it's regressed in the past few years and even more so now that they've re-made themselves this spring with a new logo and website. The only new cartoons that will be added to this fall's schedule will be "Tiny Toon Adventures" airing Monday to Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET (Fridays will be movie nights) and "Babar", the story of Babar the elephant featured in the popular children's books, weekdays at 9:30 a.m. ET.. Both series will debut along with the rest of the fall lineup Monday, September 2, highlighted by a Labour Day Weekend Tiny Toons marathon which will run throughout the long weekend.

By the time Labour Day rolls around, I'll be still trying to figure out how to get Antenna TV or MeTV smuggled across the border because these other channels just don't do much for me like they used to and that's just sad.

I wish Canadian TV would go back to about 2001 when channels like Lonestar and TV Land Canada were loaded with real classic shows.

Sad

It's a shame that there are no channels that air older shows (even on off hours like at 11am or late night) the way they used to. I remember that certain channels used to air WKRP in Cincinnati at 11am, and Emergency! or The Mary Tyler Moore Show at 2am - and I took it for granted that some channel would always be doing that.

Joy TV spent the last few years airing older shows on their schedule. One year it was Ironside, Magnum P.I. Rockford Files. Then it was Laverne and Shirley, Cheers, Happy Days. This past year it was The Bob Newhart Show, I Love Lucy, The Odd Couple and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But the upcoming season they will not be airing "oldies." They'll be airing Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens and Frasier, certainly not my idea of classic comedy.

I want to see the full Teletoon Retro schedule, to see if they changed some timeslots around and things like that. Hopefully it comes out soon.

I'm really happy that Growing Pains is going to Comedy Gold, though. That's solid. Hasn't aired in a while even on American channels. Helps switch things up!

Also worth mentioning is on MTV Canada weeknights at midnight is Saved by the Bell followed by California Dreams (both moving from MUCH to MTV).

Still waiting on DejaView to see what the "TBD Sitcoms" end up being, since their schedule right now isn't complete.

Interested to also see what TVtropolis, ABC Spark, and (even though not Canadian) Peachtree TV end up doing as well...

I do think Comedy Gold has been getting better since they first premiered.

I don't care for the addition of Growing Pains at all, but am not going to complain since CG is still keeping a lot of the shows I like to watch. re. Bob Newhart, MTM etc. Wings is a good addition.

However, enough with Full House. It is very, very frustating when a show you don't care for is on 2 channels. Full House, along with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air were both on CG and CTS. (don't know if they are still on CTS).

As for Super Dave & Dave Steinberg, I think there is a rule that Canadian classic TV channels must have certain percentage of Canadian progamming. The real frustrating part is that these shows get the best time slots.
