San Francisco man's invention leaves his girlfriend 'glowing'

A San Francisco man brings new meaning to the tune "You Light Up My Life," proposing to his girlfriend with an engagement ring that glows when he is near. Electrical engineer Ben Kokes, 36, secretly spent months working on the titanium ring for his girlfriend, Julie. It has 23 stones -- 13 diamonds and 10 sapphires. Inside the ring, Kokes embedded a copper coil that lights up when it comes close to an induced alternating magnetic field, according to NBC News.

That magnetic field comes from a specially-crafted bracelet he wears. When he gets about 4 inches away, the ring lights up in response. Kokes had planned to propose to Julie during a hike, but fog forced them into an ice cream shop in San Francisco, where his invention worked like a charm. "She said: 'Oh my God -- that’s incredible!'" Kokes said of Julie's reaction when he told her he made the ring.

The original plan was to take Julie to a professional jeweler for a permanent ring, but Koke told CTV she wants to keep what he's made her. He's working on a couple of updates to the ring and making sure the stones are more secure.
