Default Would this be considered shoplifting.... (or illegal in anyway)

Ok for e.g.

if a store was selling a pack of bath towls in 3 colors, say, pink, yellow and green for 7.99

But say you wanted 3 pink towels only and you didn't want to spend $24.00 on 3 packs of towels just to get the pink ones out of it, SOOO.. what if you take the green and yellow towels out of 1 pack, and take 2 pink towels out of the other 2 pinks and put the 2 pink ones into the pack with the other pink one, making a pack of 3 pink ones...... then say you discard the green and yellow towels into the other 2 backs making a pack 2 yellows and a green and a pack of 1 yellow and 2 greens.

Then you buy the NOW pack of 3 pink towls for it's price, 7.99.

I'm sure a store would not like you doing that but would it be illegal or considered shoplifting?

Oh and hypothetically say the packs of towels here readily opened and you didn't have to tear into them and mess them up.

Some stores will let you "Mix and Match" items. As long as you get permission it's not shoplifting. Doing stuff without their permission is a whole other matter.

I would make sure to ask the store personnel if they have the packages in one color only. If not ask, is there a way I get get 3 yellows for the price of 3 different colors. They may say yes or say, "We sell that way only" . It is worth a try to ask. I wouldn't help my self and tear open the package.

I have seen people doing things like that in stores but I minded my own business. I could never behave like that because of the way I was brought up, and besides I have plenty of towels, they all say Holiday Inn on them.

I don't know about it being illegal, but I think it's rude.

My mother works in retail and she would go freakin' nuts if you did that in her department. Why? Because very few people want to buy opened packs of towels or anything else that has been handled by another customer. You've gotten what you wanted, but you've ruined the other packs. If the store wants to try and sell them, they will have to mark them down (which still doesn't guarantee a sale) which causes the store to lose money. When a store loses money, they raise the prices for everyone. So, yes it's stealing.

It would be like when George Banks was upset in Father of the Bride about the ratio of hot dogs to buns and teared the packages apart so he could get what he wanted. It was a funny scene but not something you should do in real life, it would be inconsiderate of the store selling it and any customer (most actually) who would want to buy a package that wasn't tampered with. By the way George ended up in jail for what he did.

Ok I haven't done the things with the towels but what I did once was a long time ago, I was shopping in the artificial silk flowers, I was wanting an arrangments of like 7 field daisies.

They had those but they were sold in bunches of seven flowers with only like 2 field daisies on each one, I did not want to buy like 4 arrangements just to get the 7 daisies I needed, SOOO... I took the heads off of 5 flowers from one arrangment, and took the heads off of 6 daisies from 3 other arrangements and put them on the empty steams from the first arrangment, giving me a boquet of 8 daisies, and I put the heads of the flowers I took off onto the empty steams from the other arrangments that I took the daisies off of.

I felt guilty about it, but I just didn't want buy all those just for a few flowers.
