CBS Reups Tony Awards Through 2018

The Tony Awards will stay on CBS through at least 2018. The network has inked a new five-year broadcast agreement with The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for the awards show, which honors Broadway’s best.

This illustrates CBS’ increasing commitment to the Tonys. After a string of one-year renewals, CBS in 2010 made a three-year Tony deal, which will now be succeeded by a five-year pact.



The Tonys have aired on CBS for 35 years, since 1978. The 67th annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on June 9. The show returns to Radio City Music Hall after two years at the Beacon Theatre.

Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris returns as host.



“We’re pleased to renew our commitment to the performing arts and look forward to continuing this great and long-standing partnership by bringing the best of Broadway to primetime television for many years to come,” said Jack Sussman, CBS’ EVP Specials, Music and Live Events.

In addition to the Tonys, CBS is the longtime broadcast home of another annual event celebrating achievement in performing arts, the Kennedy Center Honors. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment will return as executive producers.

Weiss will serve as director for a 14th consecutive year.

I absolutely love the Tony Awards! IMO it's the best awards show on TV, and hence the only one I will watch (unless someone I really admire is nominated for an award of a different kind). It's really cool to see all the familiar faces of people that I had no idea were on Broadway. But of course the best reason to watch is because of David Hyde Pierce!
