Bridge Collapses In Washington State By CNN Staff Updated 1:11 AM EDT, Fri May 24, 2013 ![]() (CNN) -- An Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River in Washington has collapsed, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol said Thursday. People and cars were in the water. The bridge is located in a rural area, said Trooper Mark Francis, the spokesman. Because of that, he said he did not expect mass causalities or injuries. There were no immediate reports of either. CNN affiliate King 5 News in Seattle broadcast still images of the evening collapse, showing a span of the bridge in the water and crowds nearby. Images included two people sitting atop vehicles in the water. It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse, which happened some 60 miles north of Seattle. The Washington State Department of Transportation will take over the investigation, Francis said. CNN's AnneClaire Stapleton contributed to this report. |

That's scary! I have a bridge phobia and I try to stay away from especially high long suspension bridges but sometimes it can't be avoided. I can't drive over them so I leave that to my husband. I just shut my eyes and hope that we cross it safely! I remember when that huge double decker bridge in Oakland collapsed onto traffic during the 1989 earthquake. That really freaked me out!
I am so glad that in this instance that no one was hurt.

On the contrary, I love bridges. My favorite by far is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I've gone over it several times during some of my visits to Frisco.

i have driven over that bridge many times, it is pretty scary to think about. at least no one was seriously hurt.
this is a major transportation route and will probably affect local economies severely for some time - its not like they can just plop down a temporary bridge that can hadle that amount of traffic. |

What a nightmare. I have a bridge phobia too, and I do my best to avoid them. We have the Mystic River Bridge here, which leaves me breathless. I'm so glad nobody was hurt.

This was so awful and it's fairly close to where I live, although I don't usually travel that far north. Thank God no one was seriously injured or killed. I'm sure the traffic will be a nightmare for a while but the important thing is that everyone is safe.

Have most of you seen the Tacoma Narrows "galloping" bridge film, from decades ago (1940)? That was absolutely wild -- and enough to give anyone a bridge phobia.

I live in British Columbia and am located about 1 and ahalf hours drive north of that bridge. I've traveled over it a few times on trips to Seattle and could never have imagined anything like this happening!

Thank God no one was hurt. This reminds me of that bridge collapse in Minnesota in the summer of 2007.

I don't have bridge phobia, but I'm always concerned about unstable bridges and poorly built bridges.
