I drove Taxi in Central New York for 4 years and I did have a dispatcher allot like Louie. He was a smart mouth and always looking down on us; calling us losers among other names, dirty ones. The only difference was, he was 6:4. But where Taxi (TV Show) had many drivers who aspired to be something better, with the exception of Alex, most of our drivers were happy where they were. But I wasn't. This was just a temp job for me and wasn't supposed to last more than a year, but I just couldn't find anything else. But then something better actually came looking for me. It only took 4 years lol. Now I am working a job I love and making great money. I hated driving Taxi in NY. But I would love to do it at one of the California Beach cities, and probably will one day soon.

Yeah i think most taxi drivers in real life are treated like crap by society, it can be a hard job driving crazy people around everyday full time.

Oh yeh. I had my share of crazy people. I picked up 3 girls one day from a college and one of the girls didn't like Taxi drivers so she started giving me a hard time. Calling me a low life, and I did nothing but be courteous to her. She wanted to impress her friends I guess, so she threw a pen and hit me in the back of the head. I stopped the car and got out yelling at her. I had to call the cops to get her out of the car. Don't think I didn't want to grab her by the hair and jerk her out of the car, cause I did. But I didn't want to go to jail for it. She was banned from our service after that.

No, in the 4 years I worked a Taxi cab, I never got robbed once. I was so lucky too, because some of my co workers did, but no one was killed or even hurt bad. I did get cheated a couple of times though. When I went to work driving cab, I did have a great fear of getting robbed and shot. But the fear of ending up on the street because I couldn't pay my rent, was even bigger, and more real at the time.

Its pure and simple really. If your a taxi driver in ANY large city, there's no telling WHAT kind of havoc you may find yourself engulfed in.Particularly in a city as socially diverse as New York. But I will say this. Most cabbies I've encountered have been as good natured as the ones depicted on "Taxi".Of course there are exceptions, but then there are widespread undesirables in ANY profession. That's life....

The best thing to being a Taxi driver person is keeping to yourself and not making conversation with strangers you drive around everyday unless they look friendly even then you have to be careful they might be having bad thoughts in their minds.

Statistically, being a cab driver is one of if not the most dangerous occupations in the US.

I think being a cop is the most dangerous position, cops get killed everyday around the world on duty some bullets can go threw bullet proof vests, watch family matters their is a episode where eddie almost gets killed by a crazy criminal in the 9th season i think the last episode he gets shot but he was wearing a bulletproof vest that saved his life.

Read a story about a guy who drove NY Taxi for 22 years, saved his money then moved to Florida and started a convertible Taxi service. Called "Topless Taxi" lol. He made a fortune with it. Wish I could do something like that.
