This is the third messages that I am posting during this sitting. The first one was on the "Mad About You" page. You see, a few days ago, I posted a thread called "All in the Family". The purpose of this thread was to make the point that, it was because of the barriers that were broken down by shows like "All in the Family" that made it possible for the eventuality of shows like "Mad About You". "All in the Family" dealt with such topics as religion, war and homosexuality in ways that no one on TV had ever dared to deal with before. Now let us fast-forward to the nineties. The character of Fran was constantly referring to her butt as her ass. This was part of the boldness of her character. Well, I would say that it was because of the censorship that got relaxed during "All in the Family" days that made it possible for characters like Fran to be created. Believe it or not, this thread generated a reply! A fellow poster called Gilligan Fanatic responded saying that he agrees with me about how groundbreaking a show "All in the Family" was. My first post in this sitting was on the "Mad About You" page and it was a response to this post. I then went over to "Gimme a Break!" and started a new thread called "The Wisdom of Gilligan". The purpose of this thread was to tell my buddies there about what had happened on the "Mad About You" page. I would say that "Gimme a Break!" is another show that benifitted from the barriers broken down by "All in the Family". That series got away with dealing with such topics as death, birth control and busing. And now we come to "Caroline in the City". This show was also quite liberal when it came to such topics as sex, religion and other things that were strictly taboo in "Brady Bunch" days. One example that sticks out in my mind is the one where Del was dating a Jewish woman and tried to sellhimself as being Jewish as well. Caroline mentioned how she remembers, from times that she had been intimate with him that he had not been circumcised! This is truly a situation that could have never come to be if not for the barriers broken down in the seventies!
