Post Man Kills Self At Airport

Sources: Man at Bush Airport had assault rifle, note

Man kills self at airport near ticketing counter

Posted: May 2, 2013 2:14 PM CDT Updated: May 2, 2013 5:34 PM CDT

Houston - A man who shot and killed himself at Bush Intercontinental Airport had an AR-15 assault rifle and also had some kind of note with him, sources tell KPRC Local 2. The incident happened near the ticketing counter in the pre-screening area of Terminal B of the airport Thursday around 1:35 p.m.

Police sources said the man walked in before the security checkpoint, fired a shot into the ceiling and then allegedly shot himself. “The suspect entered the terminal about 1:35 p.m. just inside the departure area,” said Kese Smith, an HPD spokesman. “He discharged his weapon one time into the ceiling. A Homeland Security Special Agent heard the shot from a nearby office. He came out and confronted the suspect. The agent gave the suspect verbal commands to drop the weapon.” The spokesman said that the suspect was still armed when he turned toward the special agent. The special agent then discharged his weapon "fearing for his safety and that of the passengers in the terminal."

A Harris County medical examiner confirms that the man has died. The cause of the man's death will be determined by an autopsy, sources said. "At the same time, it appears the suspect may have shot himself," said Smith. A Homeland Security Special Agent was taken to the hospital, but only as a precaution, sources told Local 2. Information about injuries that the agent sustained were not available.

An employee who works at the airport's food court said they heard two gunshots, but did not see anything. Two minutes later, the employee said they heard two more gun shots. Police said they are not looking for another suspect. After 4 p.m., police were searching a Chevrolet Silverado truck outside of Terminal B that belongs to the suspect. Terminal B remains closed. Passengers are now being told to go to other terminals, said authorities.

It's too bad he did that, but I'm glad he didn't take anyone with him.

Confused

I'm confused here. Just who shot who? Did the officer
shoot the guy? Or did the guy shoot himself?

My comment had nothing to do with you, or with your choice of a story to post. I'm simply sick of people who have no idea what they're talking about referring to this gun or that gun as an "assault rifle". There is no such thing as an assault rifle. "Assault rifle" is merely a political term.

I apologize for not making that point in my first post. That was not a criticism of you at all.
