Question What if Edith could not escape from the rapist from her house

Would the episode be more emotional and depressing if edith bunker would not be able to escape from the rapist attacking her in her house ?

Yeah that might have been a little TOO heavy for the show. I can immagine the aftermath would have been MUCH MUCH harder for Edith, and she was already in horrible condition after it happened as it was.

Once on "Facts of Life",Natalie was raped but you never saw the assailant you just heard her discuss the attack to Mrs.Garrett et. al after the fact. And yes, showing anymore of it probably would have gone a little beyond acceptable perameters, even for AITF.I think even today's standards and practices wouldn't allow much more if any.Maybe on a police/forensic show but even then...

Actually, Natalie was "almost" raped. She was able to fight back and get away from her assailant. She still had a pretty intense case of PTSD however.

This was one episode of AITF that scared me and made me cry.

It was really emotional when Edith finally gets away and runs in grabbing Archie.

I think Archie would have been mad if that happened to edith instead of her getting away from that jerk before he could do anything.

How did this get past the CBS censors?

Whose crazy idea was this in the first place? Some writer, "Het, let's do an episode where Edith gets sexually assaulted!" and not be chunked as a bad idea, but something that gets the green light. If I were a suit, I would have said no, this is a situation COMEDY.

The guy who was the actor who played the rapist was supposedly threatened as he was walking down the street because people cannot tell the difference between TV and reality. He's dead now (from cancer I think).

I have never found this episode to be appropriate. Everyone knows what rape is, and it could have been handled in a later time in a drama. I was a kid in the 1970's and watched this show with my parents, and what fun it was to tell little Johnny what rape is.

Well AITF dealt more with real life issues than other shows. I've heard ppl say that AITF was the Roseanne of it's day.

Yeah people think the actors are just like the characters they play on a TV show what people dont no is the producers are to blame not the actors who are forced to play their parts for cash.

More depressing definitely. However, I believe it's more emotional the way it is. It's such a wonderful moment when Edith finally gets away from that guy. The emotion, to me, comes from that moment. If it didn't happen, it just would be a depressing episode that I think people would avoid in reruns.

If I had been in the audience, when Edith escaped, I'd have done a standing ovation, clapped as loud as I could and cheer as well.

Yes, AITF was a comedy, however, I feel this episode was no different from any other that they did in regards to doing stories that was "taboo" and IMO, that's what set them apart from the others of their time. This episode was done in a very real way and very well done IMO. If you all recall, earlier in the show, Gloria was groped while walking by a construction site. Sure, we didn't see it, but they showed the effects of it.

Every show in the 70's and 80's that was a comedy show had to have atleast a couple controversy episodes to teach the viewers a lesson about whats going on in the world everyday, People say this episode of AITF is the most disturbing episode of the series run.

As with anything it's all a matter of opinion. But it was disturbing because rape is disturbing - is it not?

.The scene would have been better if archie walked in the room and tried to fight the creepy rapist away before he could make a move on edith, we never new if archie was a fighter on AITF he could have been like the hero.
