Of the set re-decoration on season four, I like the new kitchen! More modern looking than the old one. However, I don't like the new green carpet throughout the living room, stairway and den. Also, I don't like the new orange sofa in the living room.
The new built in bookcase in the living room is nice. Also, I wish they had made at least 28 or 30 episodes for season four instead of a paltry 26. The first three seasons had at least 32 each. |

The S4 redecoration of the Baxter kitchen was not only a funny episode, but a sneaky link to the series' sponsor. (I liked the scenes where George slices open the milk carton with the electric knife, and the [now edited-out] scene where Dorothy and Hazel use a tape recorder to subconsciously plant the idea of remodeling the kitchen into his mind.)
Hazel, remember, was sponsored by Ford; shortly after "Hazel" premiered in 1961, Ford bought Philco Corporation so, Ford hoped, they would expand into electronics. Thus, Ford inherited an appliance division not unlike General Motors' Frigidaire (and you'll remember that, while Chevrolet was the sponsor of "Bewitched," Samantha zapped up her meals with the latest Frigidaire appliances). While the earliest shows featured Hazel using a gas range to bake cookies --and there was an RCA Whirlpool gas refrigerator in the very first opening sequences--it wouldn't take much for Ford to suggest to the show's producers to show off Hazel's wonderful new Philco-equipped kitchen. (Not to mention avocado green was a new exciting choice beyond coppertone and white!) It didn't work. Philco became Philco-Ford Corporation in 1966, ironically, after Hazel had moved in with "Mr. Steve," whose kitchen was furnished with some other company's products! |
