"Glee" Enlists Patty Duke, Meredith Baxter as Blaine Preps Proposal

"Glee" is continuing to champion LGBT equality.

The Fox musical has cast Patty Duke and Meredith Baxter to play a lesbian couple who wind up becoming mentors for Kurt and Blaine, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As first reported by E!, Duke and Baxter -- who recently came out herself -- were personally recruited to play a longtime lesbian couple who first appear in "Glee's" upcoming season four finale.

Blaine (Darren Criss) will first encounter Duke's character in the finale when he decides to propose to on-again, off-again boyfriend Kurt (Chris Colfer) and hits a jewelry store to buy a ring for his former classmate where he meets Patty Duke's character.

After she learns of his love for Kurt, she and her partner of 25 years (Baxter) offer to be their mentors -- who will share their journey with them as the couple learn how much society has changed in the past 25 years.

The story line would imply that Blaine could potentially head to New York to join Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt and Santana (Naya Rivera) on the East Coast after graduation.

E! reports that the story line was inspired by the current same-sex marriage Supreme Court case. For his part, "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy, who is openly gay, has been a big supporter of President Obama's embrace of marriage equality, hosting a May fundraising dinner for his campaign.

Baxter and Duke will reportedly return for "Glee's" fifth season, as deals with producer 20th Television and Fox continue for a formal renewal.

Commence swooning. Does this mean that Blaine will pop the question?

While at the store, Blaine meets an employee, played by guest-star Patty Duke, who’s part of a long-term lesbian couple (the other half is played by "Family Ties‘" Meredith Baxter).

The pair befriend Blaine and Kurt and give them some advice on love.
