Is there a difference between watching your shows on DVR and On Demand? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Trying to make sense of the extra $10 fee that Comcast charges to have DVR service when i can still see the same show On Demand for free and do the same thing like...."rewind a funny scene"

So is there something about DVR that is more appealing?

Negatives of On Demand:
Some networks don't allow you to fastforward
A few shows aren't included

With DVR you can fastforward and DVR anything you want (including movies).

Also sports. If you're out during a ballgame, you can DVR it.

One HUGE Advantage of DVDs are

NO COMMERCIALS!

With a DVR you have to fast-forward through them (Dish's "Hopper" notwithstanding) and, as yankeejr12 has stated - many "On-Demand" cable channels won't let you fast-forward through the commercials. Also some DVRs will erase a title automatically after a while, DVDs on the other hand can be put away and watched later. I've been watching my TV Shows and Movies without commercials for a little over six years, and there is no way I'm turning back!

EDIT: I misread the thread title, if I were to choose between DVD and on-demand I'd choose a DVR, but that's a moot point since I no longer subscribe to a Pay-TV service.

The big difference is as already mentioned you can record ANYTHING you want as opposed to On Demand which has a very limited selection.--Also you can fast forward a lot quicker on a DVR(great for skipping commmercials).Not to mention you can record something at the same time your watching another program.I'm not a big fan of a lot modern technology in general, but DVRs are very good and simple to use.

But if On Demand has the show isn't it pretty much the same?

IF the show is On Demand and you can fastforward, then yes.

EDIT: I prefer DVR. On Demand never seems to have what I want and I hate having to watch commercials. If I wanted to do that, I would have watched it live during its regular time.

I would guess they should be,I really don't use On Demand that much though so I can't give you a good answer on that. An aside:I think it is rediculous that DVRs are not available to buy like VCRs and DVD players always have been.They 'should' be sold for something like 30 dollars or so,with none of that monthly fee nonsense,but they are not. I guess the Pay TV companies somehow managed to keep them off the market.

But why are commercials a big deal when you can online until the show comes back on?

Sometimes I just like to sit down and watch television. With DVR I can relax and fastforward through the commercials.

So your PC is nowhere near you when you watch TV? I keep my laptop on the side of me so when the commercials come on i can surf the web.

No, not all the time. Sometimes I have it, but not always.
