Default Why is Avril Lavigne the most unlikable female artist in pop music?

Hey guys. I just want to have a serious discussion with everyone here.

I get ridiculed and belittled by a lot by people for listening to Avril. She’s seen as a manufactured product with a marketable image and very little talent.

And with Avril’s new single, Here’s To Never Growing Up, the anti-Avril sentiment among the masses has become more potent than ever.

On the other hand, the general public doesn’t seem to have a problem with other female pop artists like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, P!nk, and Kelly Clarkson. Fans of these female artists usually aren't met with such a harshly negative reaction like Avril fans are. It seems as though these women get more appreciation from the public than Avril does.

Here are several notable examples of this double standard-

#1
Avril is seen as 100% manufactured pop fodder. But so is Britney, and everyone loves her.

#2
Avril gets slammed for her immature behavoir, for her annoying/obnoxious music, for her bad singing, for her simplistic songwriting, and for her juvenile songs/lyrics. Yet, Pink has a shouty voice; sounds obnoxious in So What; drops S-bombs and F-bombs in Raise Your Glass; comes up with lyrics like “slam slam oh hot damn”; comes up with song titles like ****ing Perfect and U + Ur Hand; rides a lawnmower on stage; has had pink hair; and...well...uses the stage name “P!nk” with an exclamation point embedded in it (like how Kesha uses the stage name “Ke$ha” with a dollar sign embedded in it). Additionally, let’s not forget such thought-provoking songs as Kelly Clarkson’s My Life Would Suck Without You and Taylor Swift’s We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

#3
Avril gets criticized for regressing, for not reinventing herself, and for not evolving/progressing/maturing musically and artistically. People say her songs are mostly dribble about missing someone or loving someone. Yet, P!nk’s music has become repetitive since 2006, as she continues to release boy-bashing singles (Blow Me), or self-empowerment singles (Raise Your Glass, ****ing Perfect). Moreover, Taylor Swift mostly releases singles about boys (You Belong With Me, Love Story, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, I Knew You Were Trouble). Adding to that, no one has referred to Taylor’s work with Max Martin to be a regression.

#4
Avril was called a “sellout”, a “fraud”, and a “hypocrite” when she released Girlfriend. Yet, people have no problems with P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, and Taylor Swift collaborating with Max Martin in order to produce hit singles.

#5
Avril is considered a “fake punk rebel” whose image has run its course. Yet, P!nk has a “badass rock star” persona, and people readily eat it up.

#6
Avril frequently gets lumped into the same league of teenybopper singers that includes Justin Bieber and One Direction. Yet, no one bemoans about how Taylor Swift has legions of teen and tween girls making up the majority of her fanbase.

#7
The world laughed when Avril announced her engagement to that Nickelback guy. Yet, no one laughs at all the guys that Taylor Swift has dated over the years.

So a lot of these criticisms of Avril could easily be leveled against other female artists.

Why are all the other female artists more respected by the public than Avril is? Why do people think that it’s deserving of antagonism to listen to Avril? Why do people think that it’s more tolerable to listen to all the other female singers? Why can’t Avril get the same type of appreciation that other female artists get?

I understand that haters gonna hate. But the level of Avril hate that I encounter among everyday people is just beyond measure. It’s like Avril is as reviled as Justin Bieber. But every single put-down I hear regarding Avril is just a bull**** sentiment.

How can you explain this double standard regarding Avril? What is the root cause of all this prejudice against Avril?

Thanks guys!

Please don't self-edit any expletives, just type them as you normally would and let the board filter do it's job.

Thanks.

Avril had some interesting stuff when she first started - catchy little pop songs with a pop-punk edge to them that were different from most anything out there, but she hasn't done much since then.

...and that guy from Nickleback is a complete joke and anyone associated with him instantly loses all credibility and consequently should be shunned for the sheer magnitude of the dreck he produces.

Since 2003, she's released three more albums: Under My Skin, The Best Damn Thing, and Goodbye Lullaby. He post-debut hits include My Happy Ending, Girlfriend, When You're Gone, Keep Holding On, and What The Hell.

I really hope you're just joking.

I hate Nickelback too. But I think it's completely shallow and ignorant to hate on someone based on who they're dating.

Besides, like I said, no gave Taylor Swift a hard time about dating some guy in One Direction.

Just saying.

That's because Britney is a God. Have you not heard of Godney?

I just don't see why Avril can't get a break if other female singers can.

Sad What REALLY caused Avril Lavigne’s career to go downhill?

I admit that I like Avril Lavigne. I really enjoyed Avril's first three albums- Let Go, Under My Skin, and The Best Damn Thing.

But now, Avril is quickly fading away.

Her recent albums, Goodbye Lullaby and her newly released self-titled album, both tanked. And after years of lackluster album sales, she is no longer able to tour.

It appears that Avril’s fanbase has considerably dwindled. And the general public doesn’t seem to be interested in her any more.

Amidst all of this, she repeatedly gets destroyed by the likes of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Miley Cyrus.

Avril has now become completely irrelevant in the world of pop music.

At the same time- Beyonce, Britney Spears, P!nk, and Kelly Clarkson are still going strong.

What do you think caused Avril's career to deteriorate? Why do you think Avril is struggling while other mainstream female pop artists are faring better?

Without being hateful
, I was hoping if you guys could help me determine the ROOT CAUSE of Avril’s downfall.

Thanks for listening, guys.

Try being a Madonna fan. She gets ageist comments all the time yet male singers/actors the same age or older gets less criticism or none at all.

It seemed like a lot of fans online became upset several years ago when she changed her looks -- she had gone from goth or punk styles to appearing on/in magazines wearing very feminine (or even "preppy") attire and hairstyles.

I think a lot of that was just experimenting and also taking advantage of her good looks -- I mean she's pretty gorgeous overall and has amazing hair. Nonetheless people jumped on her and called her a sellout, etc. So maybe she lost a significant sized group there, even though it was likely her more immature followers.

Of course none of that has anything to do with the actual music, but fickle fans are still just plain fickle.

Pink, Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are horrible teen pop artists!

I know Avril has to record a compilation album and don't get me wrong, I think Chad has to divorce her, no offense.

Hummm hard to say. OK how is this. She came into play fresh and offering something new. she hit the 10-whatever fans and got them with her tomboy- girl i get what i want and dont take bull attitude and simple looks image. Her voice was good and she was cute. Some songs spoke to people really strong and the music videos hammered it home. Also look at her tour and see how friendly she was. how her is the thing is that she was 17 almost 18 when she struck it big, tomboy? ok but she should have grown out of it before her 1st tour if she was going to grow out of it. When she did start to change some fans left and moved over to hard rock and the ones coming on board didn't see the 2002 but the new Avril she they didn't jump on the wagon. Then the actions and songs and music videos turned others away. She is still strong in other places, like were she is from and japan. Here is were 16 yo boys like tomboys and 19 yo boys like girls. As for the made up act, she was young when this started and liked the image she shot for and went bankable on and it worked, When you read the early years there is a lot of info that shouldn't have been put out there that showed she wasn't what she claimed to be ex they tried to set her up with country music. One thing for sure is she is still bankable with many fans still all around the world. The song alice made me want to die and the song rock n roll and the video to it made me just turned off to her new stuff.

I don't know why P!nk is being looped in with this, she's a genuinely cool person and her music is good and not deafening like the dubstep, autotune and slutty pop you get from Miley, Cher Lloyd, etc.

I don't see any hate towards Avril. It may just be that it's in your environment but not everywhere else necessarily. If she is being criticized, it's because her fan base has dumped her or other pop stars' fan bases see her as a threat or little competition in today's music world. I like Avril and her music, but the reason she might be fading is because she doesn't stay in the headlines 24/7 like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, etc, thus people lose interest in her.

All the other singers you mentioned Jericho-79 have their fair share of critics and haters too so I think it's kind of unfair to say Avril Lavigne gets picked on more than anybody else. Why her career seems to have faded faster than some others I don't know that there's a good answer for that. It just seems like the entertainment business goes that way. There are singers that are popular with a majority of people and stay popular and well liked for a long time...and then some just don't and they fade away. I don't think with any of them there's just one particular reason why the public loses interest in them and moves on so I'll just say I don't know. There was one thing Avril Lavigne did that bugged me. Early on in her career young teenage girls (fans of hers) were copying her fashion style and dressing like her. And I remember hearing she criticized them in an interview and said that they should stop copying her and figure out their own style, it sounded like she was really annoyed by it, so I think personally that's basically biting the hand that feeds you. I mean young fans have always copied their favorite artists' fashion sense or hairstyle or whatever and most bands and singers are fine with it so I don't know why Avril Lavigne thought it was a good idea to criticize her fans for doing that. I thought it was kind of childish really. I will admit I have a copy of her first album and still listen to it now and then, I think most of the songs are pretty good. But I think her time in the spotlight has come and gone.

Ed.
