Do you think the Final episode could have been better and emotional if Archie had died ?

Came across your question.
My understanding is that Caroll O'Connor did not want to give up on the Archie character and would have been happy to do Archie Bunker's Place or whatever for the next ten years (at least we could have seen Danielle Briesbois as a teen). O'Connor would have been vehemently against his character dying, and he was even trying to get Archie back on another show as an older man in the 1990's alone and driving a cab. He was actually pitching that idea to the network but they declined. Probably because Lear may not have wanted to work with O'Connor again, and personally, I think.it would have been a poor concept. O'Connor after AITF was a hit went on strike for more money. The negotiations were pretty intense, and O'Connor knew his show was a cash cow and he naturally wanted more money. Lear/CBS played hardball with O'Connor telling that they will kill of Archie and he will be fired, and O'Connor went back on stage. This was shown out in those weird episodes where Archie was away at some Shriner convention and did not come back. If O'Connor would have bolted, the show was going to kill off Archie (and probably have killed O'Connor for killing the golden goose.) |
