I wanted to make a list of the people that, for different reasons, are/were cool old people. Please feel free to add any.
Mother Winslow (Family Matters) ~ She read Rolling Stone magazine, was familiar with the slang of the 90's, could play pool like nobody's business, nailed an obnoxious guy in the family jewels, had an active dating life and didn't take crap from anyone. The Golden Girls ~ Pretty much all of them. They all attended a Madonna concert. Betty White lives and breathes cool old lady. Sophia listened to the Purple Rain soundtrack. Blanche had a very active dating life. Helen Roper (Three's Company) ~ Although she may have had a questionable fashion sense (well, it was the 70's) Mrs. Roper was friendly to the kids, quick with a witty line and was accepting of Jack's gay lifestyle (well, perceived anyway) when it wasn't commonplace. Bob Barker ~ Not so much the current Bob, who has become plagued with wrongful termination suits from the Price is Right and complaints of rude behavior. But the Bob of the 80's and 90's maintained a fine balance of rooting for the contestans and his hilariously sarcastic remarks, was an early champion of animal rights and kicked Adam Sandler's butt. Mr. Myiagi (Karate Kid movies) ~ The bad guys in these films were more likable than some would say they had any right to be. But despite that, Mr. Myiagi, who even though he was old and short in stature, had the ability to kick some rear end. Was a master of karate (learned from his father), had a bad-ass collection of classic cars, a sweet-ass house, put up with all of Danielle's incessant whining, and stopped an arrow shot at him -- with his bare hands, and performed many other awesome feats. Mona (Who's the Boss?) ~ Rich and elegant without being snobby, she didn't let her age stop her from having an active dating life. Robert Stack ~ helped put away numerous bad guys on Unsolved Mysteries, had comedic roles in Beavis and Butthead do America and BASEket ball and Pepsi commercials, maintains wide fan base to this day, 10 years after his death. Unsolved Mysteries is one of the most active forums on here. Young Mr. Grace (Are You Being Served?) ~ Usually overrode most of management's poor decisions, friendly to the younger staff, liked the ladies even in his 90's. BILL KURTIS!!! |

I've been meaning to watch Amen. It's on my "to watch" list. I watched snippets of it when it first aired when I was a kid. I have seen Mama Carlson once and don't remember much about her. I need to upgrade my WKRP set.

Old and still crotchety Dr. McCoy from "Star Trek" is a hoot. He makes an appearance in the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well as William Shatner's "Star Trek" novels.
And of course, the older Captain Kirk and Commander Spock are still cool too. Funnily enough, Scotty is still around in the ST:TNG timeline as well and he's now younger than Kirk, Spock and McCoy as he skipped over about 75 years to get there.

She wasnt a regular on the show, but how about Uncle Phil's mom on the Fresh Prince Of Belair? She snuck out of the house to go to that concert with Will. Also, what about Nana Mary from Roseanne? She was a hoot. She always talked about her younger years and how wild they were. Selma Hacker from Night Court was also an older cool lady. She was gruff at times, but I thought she was cool. But I think the top 2 ones would be Thelma Harper and Mother Winslow. Mother Winslow was ALWAYS talking about men. lol. When the actress that played her (Rosetta Lenoir) passed away, I dont remember any news outlet mentioning her death. Sad.

Gimme A Break! and Leave It To Beaver are also on my "to watch lists". I just started revisiting Night Court, having just picked up the first season last week.
I actually prefer Bev to Nana Mary. I think Estelle Parsons nailed that role. Also, Sally Struthers as Bill Addy's needy mom on Still Standing. They both nailed the part of wonderfully irritating mother perfectly. Oh here's one I forgot: Shovel-weilding Old Man Marley in Home Alone. Had to put up with all those false rumors that he was a serial killer. Turns out he was a nice guy who saved Kevin from the Wet Bandits. The part at the end where he reconciles with his family always gets me choked up. |
