There are actually songs out there in the secular rock world that sing about God or Jesus whether it's an old Gospel song or an original song.
And they use to call rock and roll "Devil's Music"! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

There are a number of songs that talk about God and Jesus that are not necessarily coming from a Christian singer or even a Christian viewpoint. Some are quite interesting and some are quite sacreligious. It is interesting to me to see the ones that seem to be truly seeking God though.
For instance, I wonder how much James Taylor really knows Jesus (I hope he knows Him as Savior of course) when he sings about Him in "Fire and Rain"? ("Won't You look down on me, Jesus? You gotta help me make a stand. You just gotta help me through another day.") And of course, Elton John mentions the Jesus Freaks outside in "Tiny Dancer". I hope he listens to those Jesus Freaks and gets saved, if he is not already. I'm pretty sure he mentions Jesus in at least one other song as well. And there are a number of other examples. I like Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" to some degree- I don't agree with his language choices and all his theology though. |

Greenbaum is Jewish and made "Spirit in the Sky" as a sarcastic remark to the Jesus People...so that song doesn't count, but these do....

I mean, Joan Osborne has a song called "One of Us", asking the question, "What if God was one of us?" - The sad thing is, she seems to be unaware of what The Bible teaches- that God did indeed become one of us- He came to us in the person of Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-14 and many other passages affirm this- John 10:30-33, for another.) For more examples- there are a number of secular artists (or at least, artists who don't necessarily claim to be Christian) who do tons of Christian songs whenever they release a Gospel album or a Christmas album with Christmas carols. Twisted Sister did a cover of "O Come All Ye Faithful" a few years back- this choice in particular was chosen mainly because one of their biggest hits, "We're Not Gonna Take It" was definitely musically inspired by the classic Christmas carol- something Dee Snider has stated in interviews. It is interesting to me to hear some groups sing songs like this that entreat listeners to come and worship Christ The Lord- I hope Dee Snider and the Twisted Sister band truly do that, but somehow I'm doubtful of that. |
