Confused You Can Drive the U.K. Way in the U.S.?

I was out on the BQE (Brooklyn-Queens Expressway for those not familiar w/ NYC) earlier today and I noticed someone had their steering wheel on the right side of the car.

I've never seen anyone driving like that here until today. Have you ever seen it? I never knew that you could here in the U.S.

I've only seen mail carriers with right-side steering wheels.

Was it brought over from the U.K. by way of ferry, and did it have a British license plate? That might explain it.

Me too. And I think UPS does that too? Not sure about the major shippers.

One thing I'm thinking, since you (James) live in NYC, it's possible that the driver of that car immigrated to the US and had their car shipped across the pond. But surely you would have noticed them a long time ago? I've been to NYC 4x now and never seen that myself! I've seen Smart Cars (a very popular car to drive in the UK, given their limited land space and all) in NYC but they had the left-hand steering wheel setup. I've also seen cars set up the other way around in London (left-hand steering). THAT one baffled me!

its not illegal to have a right-hand drive, its just very inconvenient for driving here.

but if you really wanna impress me, you are going to have to actually drive on the left hand side of the road...

When I Visited Great Britain in 1985 I found out what a "Bloody Yank" is. It's an American Tourist who, when crossing the street Forgets that the locals drive differently than we do. The Tourist does the standard Left-Right-Left, then seeing the coast is clear steps out on to the road an SURPRISE!

I'm certain the Driver of the Car who had to swerve to avoid hitting that person probably said "@#&#!!! American Tourist!

There's a spot on I-85 in North Carolina where you can do just that.

I actually knew a former Newsday delivery person who had a former Jeep DJ-5, which of course had right-hand drive when it was built for the post office.

It makes me wonder if the British Royal Mail ever considered buying vehicles custom-built with left-hand drive.

Unless I'm wrong, I don't think the mailboxes in Britain are situated like ours here in North America.

I didn't get a chance to see the license plate.

It's possible it could have come from overseas, but I didn't know that you could drive like that here.
