Ed Asner, 83, rushed to hospital after becoming disorientated onstage... then tweets he is suffering from exhaustion

Many feared the worst after Mary Tyler Moore star Ed Asner was hospitalised on Tuesday but the spirited 83-year-old has made it clear he is not going anywhere.

Managing a sense of humour from his hospital bed, the Octogenarian tweeted that he was doing fine on Wednesday.

'Reports of my imminent demise are greatly exaggerated. They tell me I am suffering from exhaustion.

'Thanks for the good wishes!,' the veteran actor wrote.

On Tuesday night The Cleveland Show star had to cut short a performance in Gary, Indiana, after becoming confused and disorientated.

The star was rushed via ambulance to a nearby hospital after having difficulty speaking during his one man show, FDR - in which he portrays Franklin Delano Roosevelt - the Post-Tribune reported.

The star was clearly having issues from the beginning of his performance, starting 45 minutes late and then 'Asner struggled with his lines', the Post-tribune said.

Obviously determined to continue, backstage crew members had to intervene as the actor became more and more disorientated.

One of those watching the performance said he seemed confused and frustrated from the beginning and while conscious as he left the stage, he was not speaking clearly.

Around 15 minutes after the show started emergency personal arrived and walked the 83-year-old off stage as he apologised to the audience and promised to return when he could.

The actor's publicist, Charles Sherman, confirmed the actor was being treated for exhaustion and was 'resting comfortably'.

The star is expected to be released from hospital later Wednesday.

Speaking to TMZ his son, Matt Asner said: 'My dad is doing fine. He was rushed to the hospital yesterday for being disoriented on stage.'

'He is resting now at an Indiana hospital and is doing well and very grumpy, which with him is always a good thing.'

His son confirmed his father's illness was far less serious than they initially believed.

'He is being assessed right now and what I can say is that it was not a stroke. That much we do know.

'He was feeling under the weather for a few weeks so he may just need some rest but for now he is just fine.'

In 911 calls obtained by the website one reported that Ed was 'sweating profusely' and another requested an ambulance be sent quickly as 'a performer is on stage and has got sick'.

Ed's acting career spans more than 60 years and has involved roles in theater, film, television series and animation.

Best known for his role of Lou Grant in seventies classic Mary Tyler Moore Show, the 83-year-old also voiced a character for Academy Award winning animated film, Up.

I just read this story and saw that he was 83 years old, and I thought that he was much older than that, pushing 90.

MTM Show began in 1970, which would have made Asner only 41 years old when the show began and 48 when it went off. He just seemed to be older than that. He fought in WWII and had a child (a daughter?) who was married.

He seems older because probably his receding hairline, somewhat of a paunch build and just his face. I honestly think though that people of his generation, who lived through a depression and WWII just looked older. Even pictures of this generation in high school made them look 10 years older.

I like Asner on television in his guest roles, but I do not like the guy's politics, and am sorry he is a *******. Lou Grant was a guy who was an "old school" hard scrabble guy who fought in the war, married young, had kids, a demanding job and a bottle of scotch in the drawer! Ed might be alive, but Lou would have died years ago, from cirrohsis of the liver from having to deal with Ted Baxter all the time!

Yes I did think he is older, but maybe not. It is funny for his character Lou had a daughter in her 20s so I just felt Ed was around mid 40's when the show came on. I do hope he is fine. The symptoms seem serious, but I guess he just must slow down. Doing a stage show at age can be tiring.

I never shared this thought before, but now would be a good time for me to do so.

For some reason, what worries me the most about Ed Asner is how conservative actresses Mary Tyler Moore and Morgan Brittany, both of whom had falling outs with him over politics, will react.

I remember when Brittany recalled them time she had a falling out with him over politics. She called out the left for claiming to be "peaceful and tolerant", apparently under the impression that ALL liberals are "hateful and intolerant" and ALL conservatives are "peaceful and tolerant".

Yet apparently, some conservatives behave the same way too. Like last year, when Andy Griffith died for example.

I don't care what his political leanings are, it's his work on screen that matters to me, and as I found out through our correspondence, how good he is as a person. Hope he's OK, I fear another black cloud looming over the MTM realm.

(Though it was kind of funny when he was so direct when he asked if he could **** on the Fox News guy)
