One of the great mysteries to me is why she agreed to do this show where her phenomenal vocal talent was mostly ignored. I watched this show when I was a kid during its original run, and I remember one night [I][Oklahoma!/I] was on. And I heard the amazing voice of Shirley Jones like I had never heard it before. I thought, woaah!, she can do that??? Why on earth has she been relegated to background vocals with a voice like that? David Cassidy is an okay singer, but Shirley Jones is tremendous. Could she have really been happy doing this show when her talents were so unappreciated there?

But on the other hand, we got to see her talent (vast!) as an actress, and on TV. Mostly, Shirley did movies. She does have a nice singing voice, which sounded very operatic to me.

She WAS one of only two cast members whose actual singing voices were heard on the show. David Cassidy was the other. In interviews Shirley has said she was happy to be in a TV show in which music was a central part of the show. I think she was happy just too promote music as an art form and not necessarily promote herself.
