TV Joy Behar's Final "View" Appearance Airs Fri., Aug. 9th

Joy Behar Leaving ABC’s "The View"
by NELLIE ANDREEVA
Thursday March 7, 2013

After 16 and a half years on "The View", Joy Behar is departing ABC’s long-running daytime talk show. I hear Behar’s contract is up in August and she has informed the network that she will not renew it as she is looking to move on to other things, including hosting a new interview show.

Behar is the last original cast member of "The View" besides co-creator/executive producer Barbara Walters who is still on the panel. The two started off alternating as the fourth co-host before Behar was named a full-time co-host.

In a phone interview, Behar said she felt 16.5 years on "The View" were enough.

It seemed like the right time,” she said. “You reach a point when you say to yourself, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’ There are other things on my plate I want to do — I’ve been writing a play, I’ve been neglecting my standup.

And following stints hosting her own shows on HLN and now Current TV, which will end with the network’s takeover by Al Jazeera, Behar is ready to do it again.

I do like talk shows, I’m interested in talking to people,” she said. “I want to do an intelligent talk show where you have room to breath.

Will that show be on CNN following reports of Behar meeting with new CNN topper Jeff Zucker?

Behar would not elaborate beyond saying that she indeed had “a positive meeting” with Zucker and that “CNN would be great place” for her next show.

But before she opens the next chapter of her career, Behar will focus on closing the current one, spending a few more months with Walters and her other co-hosts on "The View".

I have a lot of friends there, and I will miss everyone I’ve worked with because we have a family there,” Behar said. She singled out Walters, thanking the veteran journalist for putting her on the show. “It is a smart talk show because somebody of her stature is leading the conversation; Barbara was one of the main reasons I took that job,” Behar said.

Behar’s departure may foreshadow a reboot on "The View".

There had been rumors about a possible exit by Walters, with Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s future beyond this season also unclear.

Elisabeth Hasselback Leaving "The View"
by NELLIE ANDREEVA
Friday March 8, 2013

The expected revamp on "The View" is happening — the rumored ouster of co-host Elisabeth Hasselback appears to be a done deal. She would join veteran co-host Joy Behar who announced she was leaving the ABC talk show after 16.5 years.

Sources have confirmed speculation that Hasselback’s won’t be on "The View" beyond this season. According to US Weekly, conservative Hasselback was deemed “too extreme and right wing.

I hear ABC is already talking to potential replacements for Hasselback. Rumor is that Ali Wentworth was approached for the gig and passed.

Former "Survivor" contestant Hasselbeck has been on "The View" since 2003.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract,” ABC said in a statement.

Can't they just cancel the whole thing and get it over with!!! I mean, it's not like Barbara, Whoopi, etc. don't have enough money.

^Tell that to ABC - the same network that actually gave "The Chew" a second season (why?).

Barbara Walters Says Elisabeth Hasselbeck Not Leaving "The View"
The Huffington Post | by Katherine Fung
03/11/2013

Barbara Walters insisted on Monday that Elisabeth Hasselbeck will not be leaving "The View", following earlier reports that the co-host was departing the show.

"There is a particularly false story getting picked up about Elisabeth's alleged departure, saying that we don't approve of her conservative views. The truth is, we love Elisabeth. I like her personally and she's just a wonderful person. But beyond that we value and appreciate her point of view. It's important to us because Elisabeth helps give this show perspective and balance. ...

We have no plans for Elisabeth to leave this show. Having said that to all of you, Bill and I have always said that when one of you makes the choice to leave, that's your choice and we will support your decision. But right now, the only person who cannot leave the show is me.
"

She also addressed Behar's departure, saying that it will be "bittersweet." Walters said that Behar has been a co-host since the start of the show.

"I don't like my jobs to last longer than my marriages," Behar joked.

"I want what's best for you. I want what's best for all of you," Walters said, adding that she will miss Behar.

Behar will be leaving when her contract expires in August.

It's obvious that there are some shake-ups behind the scenes.Maybe they should just cancel the show.As much as I like it, it may be that time to go.

With Barbara, herself retiring in a year or so, I'm surprised that there "shaking things up", at this point. Whoopi and Shari Shepard will be the only ones left along with some newbies. Maybe its time for the whole show to retire.

"The View" Says Goodbye to Joy Behar — and Who Should Replace Her?
July 31, 2013
by Elizabeth Wagmeister

"The View" is sending of original co-host Joy Behar in style.

At a taping of Behar's final special tribute show, to air Friday, Aug. 9 on ABC, the 70-year-old comedienne was surprised by a slew of famous friends — including Regis Philbin, Joan Rivers and former View-er Meredith Vieira —to reminisce about her 16-year run.

Emceed by rumored replacement Mario Cantone, who would be the show's first full-time male panelist, the episode closes with a special performance by Tony Bennett.

Who does Vieira think should take Behar's spot on the panel? "If a man were to step in, it would be Mario," she says. "He was a huge supporter of the show long ago when we were desperate for support. And he may have a vagina for all I know!"

Co-host Sherri Shepherd agrees, teasing, "He fits the bill of being bitchy and a woman!"

All jokes aside, "Whoever takes Joy's place has to be completely fearless — when I say fearless, I mean you cannot be afraid to speak up," Shepherd says. "They've got to be ballsy, they've got to be brassy, they've got to be funny and I don't know who fits that bill."

Other buzzed about contenders to take the seat next to Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg and Shepherd are Brooke Shields, Ali Wentworth and Hota Kotb.

(Jenny McCarthy has already been hired to replace Elisabeth Hasselbeck.)

But for now, all eyes are on Behar, who will film her last live show on Aug. 8.

"I think Joy should do whatever the heck she wants," Vieira told TV Guide Magazine of Behar's next move.

"She deserves it." Shepherd agrees. "The sky's the limit for her. I would love to see Joy on Broadway. I would love to see Joy do a one-woman show."

Whatever she does, she'll enjoy her free time. "The morning is not my favorite time to work," admits Behar. "It's nice to have a life off of TV!"
