Exclamation Cleveland Affiliate Disses NBC Primetime w/ "Matlock" 2-Hour Movie

Cleveland Affiliate Disses NBC Primetime with 21-Year-Old "Matlock" Movie — And Will Do It Again
by THE DEADLINE TEAM
Friday March 1, 2013

It hasn’t been the best week for NBC, which just found out that for the first time in network history it finished fifth behind Spanish-language Univision in the just completed February sweep.

Even Jay Leno bashed his network during his "Tonight Show" monologue last night, rattling off a string of jokes at his bosses’ expense (example: “NBC is doing so badly we don’t have reruns anymore because nobody saw the shows the first time.”)

Now comes word that the network’s Cleveland affiliate WKYC-TV bumped last night’s scheduled repeats of "The Office" and "Law & Order: SVU", as well as a new "1600 Penn" (ouch), for a two-hour "Matlock" movie that originally aired in 1992.

It’s doing it again to the struggling Thursday lineup on March 7 for another "Matlock" movie.

Station president/general manager Brooke Spectorsky told Broadcasting & Cable that the move was “about maximizing station inventory” and had nothing to do with NBC’s primetime performance, and that originally the station thought "1600 Penn" was going to be a repeat.

WKYC, which has played the "Matlock" card before, is banishing NBC’s primetime lineup to a 1 AM Saturday start both weekends.

For the record, last night’s freshman comedy "1600 Penn" continued its slide nationally, drawing a 0.9/2, down a tenth from last week to a series low.

And "Matlock", starring the recently Oscar In Memoriam-snubbed Andy Griffith, for karma topped a repeat of ABC’s post-Oscar Jimmy Kimmel special in the men 25-54 demo in Cleveland, B&C said.

That story is getting tons of press here today!! I was not watching WKYC-3 (Cleveland's NBC affiliate) last night, but I flipped channels to watch their 11 p.m. news (and after, Jay Leno) and saw "Matlock" on the thing on the screen that tells you what show is on. I was like, what?

I'd rather watch Matlock than anything that's currently on NBC.

I'd rather watch Matlock, too. Currently the only shows on NBC that I watch are Days of our Lives and Whitney. I used to watch Law & Order: SVU until all the stories became the same just with different people.

As it stands now, here is my current watch list for the major networks:

ABC:
Malibu Country
The Neighbors
Scandal
Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23
Body of Proof
Once Upon a Time
Revenge
Red Widow (starting 3/3)

NBC:
Days of our Lives
Whitney

CBS:
2 Broke Girls
48 Hours

FOX:
American Idol (getting ready to give up due to it basically sucking now)

I watch more cable channels than I do major networks because they are all really getting horrible. After looking at my list it's really sad because most of the shows probably won't be back for another season after the current one ends.

Hey! I want Matlock! I wish WLEX 18 (our NBC affiliate) would follow along and give us some Matlock love too!

NBC now has "Must Flee TV".

Maybe NBC should play these shows and see what happens....

Let's see if the older NBC Shows would get better ratings than what's on NBC now!

It did get better ratings than the Jimmy Kimmel Oscar party rerun on WEWS Channel 5 (Cleveland's ABC affiliate).
