Seth MacFarlane Slammed by Parents Television Council
3/1/2013 by Paul Bond Seth MacFarlane tweeted that there was "no way" he'd host the Oscars again. That’s not good enough for some folks who were offended by some of the entertainer’s jokes that night about women, minorities, Christians and Jews. At the top of that list is the Parents Television Council, and on Friday, the group was touting an online petition to ensure the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences “does not invite Seth MacFarlane to host the Oscars" again. “Seth MacFarlane has built a career on programs that wallow in misogyny and anti-Semitism; joke about violence against women, rape, pedophilia, incest, and bestiality; and even ridiculing children with disabilities,” the petition reads. “Knowing this, the Academy still chose to invite MacFarlane to host the 2013 Academy Awards.” MacFarlane, though, is a frequent target of the PTC, with perhaps its most high-profile criticism coming after his "Family Guy" TV show featured a mean female character with Down syndrome and implied former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was her mother. If history is a guide, MadFarlane won’t take PTC’s petition too seriously. In an interview with the Advocate magazine five years ago, he said that criticism from the PTC is akin to “getting hate mail from Hitler… they can suck my d--k as far as I’m concerned.” The PTC, while technically non-partisan, is considered a Christian-conservative organization. But critics come from both sides of the political spectrum. Two California state legislators, Hannah-Beth Jackson and Bonnie Lowenthal, both Democrats, wrote a letter to AMPAS president Hawk Koch saying, in part, that MacFarlane’s performance during the Oscar telecast “reduced our finest female actresses to caricatures and stereotypes, degrading women as a whole and the filmmaking industry itself." Meanwhile, some conservatives are coming to MacFarlane’s defense. John Nolte at Breitbart.com, for example, wrote: “If you can't mock actresses willing to bare their breasts or tweak someone over their accent or use 'gay' to get a laugh or make a joke about a 150-year-old assassination or tease about the tendency of some Christians to get a little stuffy -- what's left?” http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-by-ptc-425567 |

The Academy knew what they were doing when they hired Seth MacFarlane. They knew his humor was raunchy and offensive and they wanted that so more people, specifically younger people, would watch, and the ratings for the show did go up.
If they're going to continue to court a younger, "hipper" audience for future shows then hosts like MacFarlane are what they're going to seek. While I'm not a fan of his, he's not going to tone himself down anytime soon. All the PTC has to realize is that people who don't want to watch won't, and it's as simple as that. |

Last time I heard, ratings have been pretty good for this event. However, I heard speculation that the only reason ratings were good were so that they could see Shirley Bassey pay tribute to 50 years of the James Bond films.

I had no interest in watching the show anyway, so I didn't. I'd rather watch stuff I enjoy than stuff that annoys me. |

Do the PTC realize they are a joke? If not, can I be the one to tell them?

I just remember a "Tiny Toons" episode called "Washingtoon" where Buster and Babs go to Washington because humor and whatnot is gone, that's what people like PTC wants! |

And if these people are worried about what kids are watching...that's for parents to decide. |

McFarlane just even said this was his first and last Oscars he'll ever do.

I DVR'd the ceremony and watched the bits/awards that I was interested in. I didn't think he was good at hosting. Nothing to do w/ the humor, he just didn't have good hosting skills.
