Default Religious demoniations on TV

It seems like on TV shows most ppl are either Presbytarian or Baptist, and sometimes you hear mention of the Methodist.

What I'm wondering is, on TV, HOW COME you never hear mention of the Church of Chirst as someone's church on TV?

I always found it funny b/c I would say Church of Christ is the 2nd largest denomination in the country, second to Bapitst which is the largest I think.

The now-defunct ABC soap, Ryan's Hope (1975-1989) focused on an Irish-American family, the Ryans, who owned a bar and were devout Catholics. At least the mother was a devout Catholic, who went to Mass every day. The grown kids were pretty much backsliders (extramarital affairs, kids out of wedlock, etc.).

Here's the mother figure of the show, the devout Irish Catholic wife and mother of five, Maeve Ryan (Helen Gallagher):

No insult intended, but I have never heard of Church of Christ. Is it US based? Growing up, most of my friends were Catholic, with a few Lutherans and Jews thrown in.

I was raised Catholic, but my mom had a Jewish/Baptist background and was raised Southern Baptist. She converted to Catholicism when I was a kid.

I consider myself lucky to have grown up among different denominations and faiths. My family has always been open to other faiths and I'm always a little surprised/disappointed when I hear about so much infighting over religious minutiae.

Yes Church of Christ is US bases, but I dunno, maybe it's more of a Southern demonination, nearly EVERYONE around here is that.

Chruch of Christ have the reputation of thinking they're the only ones going to heaven, and having NO music in the singing.

You mention Church of Christ to someone and most likely they will say, "Oh that church that thinks they're the only ones going to heaven?!" lol

Also Church of Christ is known for NO MUSIC ALLOWED in church!! To my knowledge, it's the only church that is VERY against having music in the church. They always made such a huge issue over it.

It sounds sort of like Jehovah's Witnesses.

No no, they are VERY against Jehova's Witnesses.

They are prolly most similar to the Baptist. Minus the music and their view on Baptism.

Church of Christ believe Baptism is ESSENCIAL to going to Heaven and without it there is no hope.

All religions are cults.

Thank you for that sweeping generalization. The church of Christ that the poster speaks of is primarily southern in the USA, mainly out of Texas, Oklahoma, and that region. There are other groups that use the name in some form. They are not considered mainstream enough to be used much on TV, and religion is seldom shown on TV unless in a negative light, at least not Christian ones. The church the poster refers to believes that you must have absolutely no instrumental music, you must take communion every Sunday, and you must be baptized in the manner they prescribe precisely in order for it to be acceptable. If you were not baptized in order to be saved, they do not accept you as saved.

You're welcome.

All organized religions are forms of cults because they share one ideal. And all religions have ceremonies of one kind or another (i.e. praying or the sacrament)

Baptists don't believe that they're the only ones going to heaven. I'm Baptist.

Well minus that then, a lot in the Church of Christ DO have that attitude.

But honestly I think MOST ppl in all demominations in some way kinda feel that way, that they have it right and all otehr denominations have it wrong, or else there wouldn't be 500 different demoninations.

But I remember where I went to church the ppl getting VERY offended if they heard ppl refer to Church of Christ as a "denomination", b/c they asserted that they were THE Church, and would proudly say that other churches like Methodist, Baptist, Prysbytetian, Church of God, etc were merely denominations.

I thought the only denominations a church cared about were 10s and 20s .

Oh No

I used to have a friend who was a member of the Church of Christ, so I used to visit it with him . The members of the Church of Christ don't believe in anything unless it's mentioned in the Bible . By the same token, they run their church the way the first century church is depicted in the Bible .

I used to wonder why more characters on TV shows weren't more religious . The most likely answer is that TV writers aren't well -- informed on what various churches believe .

If you watched 7th Heaven, it was about a minister and his family who belonged to "a church" . They never pinned down which church he and his family belonged to . Reverend Camden believed in honesty, integrity, marital fidelity, and all those other good things, but he never talked much about his church's doctrine . The main reason why Reverend Camden's denomination or doctrine was never never mentioned was because the writers didn't know much about the doctrine of the typical church .

Most people probably figure "My church is fine, but there are a lot of other churches that are just as good !" . The reason why there are so many different demoninations is because somebody has enough imagination to decide what he thinks a church should be, so he has to start his own church and try his ideas out . All he has to do is get a few members, and you have a new church .

I strongly disagree with the claim "All religions are cults" . Organized religion might not be YOUR bottle of soda pop, but it means a lot to some people . I knew one woman who got really involved in her church after her husband died, so that church became her substitute family . One man I knew had a heart attack and had to sell his farm . He joined the men's service organization at my church, and it gave him a new lease on life . A lot of psychologists and philosophers believe people have a need to worship a higher power . The remark "All organized religions are forms of cults because they share one ideal ." doesn't make much sense .
