Never hit a WOMAN, or never hit ANYONE who's WEAKER than you are? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

This is something I was thinking about, ppl are always going on about how men should never hit women, and if you delve in to the reasons WHY, it usually always goes back to the fact that "women are weaker than men".

And I put that in "" b/c it's a VERY general thing to say, while it may be true in MOST cases, it's certainly not true in EVERY case.

So, what I'm wondering is, if there is such a strict rule on men not hitting women (b/c they are weaker **usually**), then why not just say NEVER hit ANYONE who is physically WEAKER than yourself?

For e.g. if a strong 6'4 muscle man hits a smaller weaker man who's around 5'3 and 120lbs, why isn't that looked at as bad as a man hitting a woman?

What's funny is, a weaker man could hit a stronger woman *who's physically stronger than himself* and THAT would be looked at as MUCH MUCH worse than a big strong man hitting a tiny weaker man who's much weaker and smaller than himself AND the other woman who he hypothetically hit.

Also most ppl say it's wrong for a man to hit a woman back even if she hits him first.

BUT if a smaller weaker guy hit a bigger stronger man *who's a lot bigger and stronger than him* FIRST, most ppl would say that the bigger stronger man is WELL justified to kick the smaller man's ass.

Just one of those little social things I don't understand.

It's like there could be a man and woman of IDENTICALLY the same size and strength and they could go up and start harrassing a big strong man, and it would be seen as perfectly ok for the big, strong man to beat up on the smaller weaker man, but he would be looked at as a moster and as pathetic if he did the same to the woman *who's identical to her male counterpart*

Again I think all hitting is WRONG, unless it's your only option.

My great aunt always said to never under-estimate the power of a woman and that was good enough for me.

Well I think when you're talking about a person who is physically weaker, they are only given as much edge and are only as tough as they are ALLOWED to be by society.

It's like I made a post in the TV forum about why tiny little petit women on TV are usually always portrayed as tough and fierce, where as tiny little petit guys are portrayed as wimps that everyone walks all over and pushes around.

I mean realistically those tiny little women could be pushed around too, but for comedy sake they are given dominance over the ppl who are bigger and stronger than them, and plus it would make the bigger ppl bullying her look like jerks.

Likewise, the tiny little guys COULD be in a tough fierce role as well IF they were allowed to be. And the bigger ppl bullying him are usually not looked at as jerks.

I'm reminded of the show Roseanne. David is always picked on and bullied and seen as a wimpy guy usually, Where as Roseanne is seen as anything but a wimp, BUT once when she was in the diner after closing time, this crazed costumer grabbed her by the shirt collar and scared her to death and she didn't act so tough then.

At that point Roseanne was FORCED into the role David is in most all the time. And she reacted much the way David reacted when Mark or someone bullied HIM.

The only difference is the crazed lunatic would be seen as a monster, where as Mark would not. And it doesn't make sense.

So in answer about that never underestimate the power of a woman, you could likewise say, "Never underestimate the power of ANYONE smaller and weaker" The only difference is the female would be allowed to get away with kicking your ass, and the male would not.

Good points, Frump. But I think it also goes back to how women often have been treated as if they were inferior to men. It's just like how you'll hardly hear anyone call a black person "a racist", as if only white people could be that. So while it's true that women generally are weaker than men, there are more reasons than that to why men's violence against women is seen as so horrible. But let's not forget that women can be terrible to men too. My brother's fiancée is one good example of that.

So while it's true that women generally are weaker than men, there are more reasons than that to why men's violence against women is seen as so horrible. But let's not forget that women can be terrible to men too. My brother's fiancée is one good example of that.
