Dad Pays Daughter $200 To Quit Facebook
14-year-old to deactivate account until June 26

(CNN) (CNN) - How do you get a teenager to volunteer to quit Facebook?
Apparently, with cold, hard cash. A Boston father is paying his 14-year-old daughter $200 to quit using the social site for almost five months, according to a post on his blog. On Tuesday, Paul Baier, a research consultant from Boston, posted an image of a "Facebook Deactivation Agreement" with his daughter, Rachel. "Her idea which I support fully," he wrote.

In the signed agreement, his daughter agrees to deactivate Facebook from this past Monday until June 26 (which, perhaps notably, would be well into summer break for most schools). In return, he'll give her $50 in April and the remaining $150 in June. Baier gets access to change her password and deactivate the account. Rachel's one-word response on the line asking what she'll use the money for: "Stuff."

On the post, several people have praised or belittled the plan. One poster, in the shameless manner not unknown on the Web, called Baier an "idiot." "Why not try something called 'parenting'. It's more difficult than bribery but will more beneficial to your daughter in the long run," the person wrote. But Kent Wellington, who describes himself as a friend of Baier's, responded.

"He's a good guy and good parent. Regardless, there's nothing wrong with a parent being proactive with their kids in the area of social media," Wellington wrote. "I'm sure the dialog that lead up to the agreement was as valuable as the contract." Rachel may be in good company. A recent report from the Pew Research Center says 61 percent of Facebook users have taken a break from the site for a few weeks or more.

That would be the day when my husband would pay his kids to do what he asked of them! You can see who rules the roost in that house!

isn't she too young to be using Facebook anyways (by the terms of their user agreement) - he could just turn her in and save a few bucks.

- or just block their IP address in their router and make sure it is password protected (which you should do anyways)

No she is not too Young. she has to be a least 13, But there are a lot of Young Kids between the Ages of 9-12 who use Facebook and Facebook doesn't even know because they fib about their age to get on it! . they don't realize how easy it is for a 10 or 11 Year old to create a Facebook account! Facebook bielve that if a 10 year old see that they have to be 13 then they won't join but that not true at all because all they have to do is lie. Same with twitter.

This dad needs to grow a pair. He is in charge not her. If he dosent want his daughter on facebook, he can put his foot down. Giving her money to give up facebook. Bad move, because she will expect this treatment from now on.

I don't think that it's bad parenting. Parent's need to choose their battles. If the daughter's FB usage is merely annoying, or the father is afraid that it's becoming too time consuming, I think that this is an excellent way to handle it. It gives the daughter the feeling of control, but that can be empowering and she will feel better about herself to choose a course of action that will reward her.

However, if he wants her to quit FB for more serious issues; ie, poor grades, associating with unsavory characters, bullying/getting bullied; he needs to man up and put his foot down.

I wish the article shared more about the father's reasons for wanting her to take a break. Seriously, she gets to use FB again in mid-June, so I doubt anything sinister is going on.
