Default If "Getting Up the Rent" was made today....

I looked at this entire episode using an inflation calculator (courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm)) and this is what I found out.

$32.00- The Money they had in the shoebox
Today:
$150 they would have had in the shoebox

$72.00- the Money they needed for the rent
Today: $335.00

$6.00- James' take home pay
today: $28.00
He would have gotten $10.00 or $47.00 in this day in age

$16.00- Willona's rainy day money would be $75.00 today
$4.00- Thelma's Afro money would be $19.00 today
$10.00- The money J.J. could have gotten for his first painting- $47.00 today
$2.00- Michael's law school money is $9.00 today.

$4200- the Limit for a family with 3 kids according to Florida would be $20,000 today

$8.00- The Money from Hal Williams' character would be $37.00 now
$4.60- the other mover's "retirement fund" would be $21.42 now

Now their rent was $104.50
For that same apartment today, it would be $487.50 a month.

Blows your mind doesn't it? With today's prices, I can totally understand their situation.

I would love to have an apt with $487 rent but I would have to worry about

1. Home invasions
2. Getting mugged

lol

Remember when James found the $27,000 robbery money? Oh lord, I just did the calculation for that amount of money he kept...$2,000:

James should have just kept his mouth shut, put the money away where Florida wouldn't find it, and then use it when emergencies came up.

Angry

Also, the government job that James would have gotten that paid $4.25 back in the day?

Today it would have paid him $20.50 an hour!

Or the preacher that would give him $100 a day- $700 a week- today that would be $482 a day and about $3400 a week- even if it was a dishonest business.

Next time you hear a dollar amount on "Good Times", get an inflation calculator handy and see how mad you get at Florida and them.
