Default Quit complaining!: 7 TV gripes that should be stopped

http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/02/01/tv-gripes/

It's time to stop whining about TV spoilers, reality TV being the end of the world, TLC not being the learning channel and MTV and VH1 not emphasizing music anymore.

The "7 gripes" and my personal opinion. After reading them, it is a pretty lame gripe list.

1.) “There are TV spoilers online after a show airs!”

Then do not read web articles or websites that would give this information!

2.) “TLC is supposed to be The Learning Channel!”

Channels like TLC and A&E started out like Public Television with commercials. They are doing the mostly "reality programming" because it brings in ratings. Reality TV is not new, it has been around for about 25 years now. Shows like Survivor and Big Brother on CBS started it all.

I like about 40% or so of "reality television". It's like any other medium, some you like, some you do not.

3.)“Firefly was awesome and Fox cancelled it!”

Fox Network has always been the fastest to cancel shows. FOX of the four networks has the least patience in seeing if a low rated show will develop and take off. FOX seems to be the best at following trends and heavily supports what works and kills shows that are 1/10th of one percent below the industry standard for a particular night for the 18-44 demographic.

4.) “I won’t pay HBO to watch Game of Thrones!”

Well, ok, don't. Shall I point out the numerous websites from around the World where the show can be watched for free? Or just wait until the DVDs come out?

5.) “MTV and VH1 don’t play music videos anymore!”

MTV hasn't played 24/7 music videos since Reagan was President. Literally. Music videos themselves was sort of a fad anyway, and MTV is more or less a morphing fad. I am almost 46 and now way out of their demographic. The only thing they ever put out that was good was Beavis and Butthead (which came back for a short run about a year ago and diappeared again ) and Daria (who was a classmate of B&B who got her own series.)

6.) “Syfy’s name is stupid! (And where are the space shows?)”

I agree. Sort of makes me wonder how this network has survived all of these years because Science Fiction is a very niche market and even now, there is (I believe) no Science Fiction on television because it is expensive and a high probability of failure.

This channel is a good example that cable companies need to have an alacarte type service to where people can pick what channels they want and do not want, because I would have no interest in this channel whatsoever.

7.) “This reality show means the apocalypse is upon us!”

Again, if you dislike reality television, CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

I hate when people complain about most of those, especially the TLC one. Every time someone mentions "The Learning Channel", I really just want to punch them in the face. The old programming didn't bring in the ratings, so they adapted to what audiences wanted. Now they have some of their highest ratings ever (thanks to Honey Boo Boo). Do I think its good programming? No, but I know there are 800 other channels to watch instead of TLC.

I didnt read too much of this article but I think the root of the problem is nothing changes. Ex. is when people complain about MTV and VH1 not showing music videos. Its too the point where thats really not even the problem now. Its what they replace it with that I think bothers people. Jersey Shore, Snooki and J-Woww etc. Yes, they may bring in the ratings but its not to say people like it.

2 gripes that were not listed that i am sick of 1 if a sitcom is not multi cam than its not funny i get so sick of people whining about how all single cam sitcoms need to go away to me funny is funny i like both single cam and multi cam sitcoms there are funny single cam show and funny multi cam show there are also single cam shows that are lame and the same can be said of some multi cams the second gripe is one that in some respects i agree with but i also understand why its just not going to happen the gripe about the lack of 50s like family shows on network tv today while i too grew up at a time where there were good family shows on tv i also understand why no matter how much we may want shows like this back on network tv there are 2 reasons why it just wont happen 1 many of the writers of the old shows had a radio background and kjnew howc to write these happy upbeat mom dad and the kids happy happy happy all the time type of show todays writers are different many come form broken homes negeateve enviorments etc wich sometimes lead to a more cynical skewed view of the world around them wich often shows up in ther writing style and i think some times with everything thats going on today many kids would view the old style type of family show that we grew up with as both corny and phony wich may be one reason that the networks are not really intrested in those type of shows anymore

1.) “There are TV spoilers online after a show airs!”

Well, yeah, it's been that way for a while, nothing you can do but avoid them.

2.) “TLC is supposed to be The Learning Channel!”

Well, You can learn a lot by observing how different people live on their various reality shows.

3.)“Firefly was awesome and Fox cancelled it!”

I watched Dark Angel, which was cancelled to make way for Firefly. Dark Angel had a good run, and a good conclusion, so I'm not bitter.

4.) “I won’t pay HBO to watch Game of Thrones!”

Steal it like most of the shows' fan's do.

5.) “MTV and VH1 don’t play music videos anymore!”

That's what MTV & YouTube are for.

6.) “Syfy’s name is stupid! (And where are the space shows?)”

It's a clever spelling.

7.) “This reality show means the apocalypse is upon us!”

Reality shows are here to stay.

Anybody who doesn't want to hear complaining should push their ear plugs in deeper.

It's everyone's right to complain about whatever they want. Whether those complaints are valid is a completely subjective matter, but to try to get people to stop it is pretty much saying, "you aren't supposed to say that" and I'll say whatever I want, as long as this is still a free country.

I used to gripe a lot about MTV not playing videos 24/7 but I don't care anymore. At 48 I'm well beyond their so-called demographic and even if they did play them all day, I doubt anything I like would be shown because the entire schedule would be filled with Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc... All in heavy rotation. I have my dvds with plenty that I recorded from the 80's and of course there's youtube that I can go to anytime and just enter the title and watch it till my heart's content. The great thing about youtube is that it has allowed me to see music videos from MTV or VH-1 in other countries that never got airplay in the U.S.
