TV James Brolin Cast as Richard Castle's Father

"Castle" Scoop: Who's Playing Rick's Father?
Jan 22, 2013
by Adam Bryant

"Castle" fans may want to clear their schedules on Monday, Feb. 25. That's the day viewers will finally meet Rick Castle's father!

Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor James Brolin has been tapped to play the elder Castle, TVGuide.com has learned. Although details about his character and background are being shrouded in mystery, we do know that Brolin's character will figure into the second half of next month's two-parter.

"I would not characterize the two-parter as being about his dad," creator Andrew W. Marlowe previously told TVGuide.com. "Hopefully we can find a great and elegant way to embrace Castle's father's mythology in a way that's going to be exciting."

In the two-parter's first installment, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) team with an FBI agent (guest star Dylan Walsh) to investigate a murder that exposes a plot to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy Middle Eastern businessman.

In the conclusion, Castle's involvement in the case will suddenly put his life in danger.

Although Castle grew up not knowing — or caring — who his father was, his interest was piqued last season when his former muse Sophia (guest star Jennifer Beals) hinted that Castle's father had enough clout to help get his son access to the CIA.

If Castle's dad is indeed involved in this international caper, perhaps Sophia's theory about his involvement with law enforcement holds water.

The two-parter begins on Feb. 18 and concludes on Feb. 25.

I'm looking forward to seeing James Brolin on the show. Also curious to see how his character fits in with Martha played by Susan Sullivan.

Keck's Exclusives First Look: "Castle" Finds His Father…But Loses His Daughter?
Feb 4, 2013
by William Keck

Who knew? Barbra Streisand is such a fan of "Castle" (and is pals with one of the producers) that she persuaded husband James Brolin to *appear on the ABC crime drama.

He plays the long-lost father of Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) in the February 25 episode, the second hour of a nail-biting two-parter that begins February 18.

Executive producer Andrew Marlowe is keeping details secret but says, "There will be a moment between father and son when Castle comes to a realization and the two men confront the realities of their relationship."

The emotional episodes also showcase young Molly Quinn, whose character, Alexis, gets kidnapped. "She tries to escape any way she can but keeps getting thwarted," Quinn says. "Near the end, Alexis kind of falls apart."

Marlowe says Fillion lets the tears flow as he portrays the powerless dad who fears for his child's life.

"We're giving Nathan the opportunity to show some colors and tackle a range of emotions he doesn't always get to show," says Marlowe, hinting that Castle's father figures into the kidnapping "in a very interesting way. He has a strong hand in how *everything gets resolved."
