I don't know about you guys but I think it's a first rate crime that this groundbreaking show is not available on DVD nor has it been seen in syndicated reruns in 20 years. I think this show needs to be released on DVD, and here's my reason why.
the Defenders was a lawyer show that ran for four years on CBS from 1961 to 1965. it starred E.G. Marshall and a young Robert Reed, playing the father son lawyer team of Lawrence and Kenneth Preston. the Defenders handled difficult cases that often focused of social issues such as Neo-Natzis, Civil Rights activists, the Hollywood Blacklist, and many others. It was one of the first TV shows to do that, and no other show on at the same time as it was doing it. To make things clear, the Defenders was nothing like CBS"s other popular lawyer show Perry Mason. Perry Mason won every single case in every episode and he almost always took murder cases, where as the Defenders tackled Cases that went far beyond just murder, and they often lost half of the cases they won, making them seem very realistic. the Defenders paved the way for other socially conscious shows that would follow it and It doesn't make sense to me that it's not commercially available on DVD or in Syndication. I want to try to persuade CBS/Paramount to release the first season on DVD but in order to do that, I need alot of supporters. so who else thinks this groundbreaking show rightfully deserves a DVD release? I sure as hell do. |
