Sad NBC...anti family?

This appeared in our local paper today.

The general manager of our local NBC station talked out the future of his station as well as NBC. Such things like upcoming digital broadcasts and of course programs. He says to get ready for a
more "adult" NBC. he talked about how NBC is getting out of the "serve the family" business by airing more "adult" shows.

He felt that its good for NBC to push the envelope when it comes to adult themes as well as sex, violence, foul language because it gives NBC the edge in attracting more generation x viewers as they felt have the most money to spend in the marketplace ( I question that one !! ).

Anyway he says how great Friends are for them and the only complaints they get is how viewers wish Friends could be more
"dirtier". The general manager was asked if he could make one wish for his tv station what would it be and his response was to air programs like "The Sopranos", Sex in the City, OZ, and Queer as Folk on his channel. As he puts it, gotta get dirty to make the money.

I find this to be sad. Hard to believe this was the same network that gave us The Smurfs and Punky Brewster. And the same channel that gave us Hee Haw.

I didn't realize NBC had any family value left in it anyway.

That is sad though. Why does everyone think that sex and violence are the only things that sell anymore? If someone really wants to know what's wrong with America today, all they have to do is turn on the TV and watch the new shows.

NBC is adding two sitcoms Leap of Faith and Watcing Ellie. They are supposed to try to duplicate the success of shows like on HBO and Showtime. I'm going to give them a try. They seem like good shows go to www.nbc.com for more information.

Note: Actually, Hee-Haw was on CBS for 3 years and syndicated over 25 years after that.

But, yeah, I hear what you are saying. NBC seems to forget its success with such shows as Family Ties, Different Strokes, I Dream of Jeannie, Facts of Life, Cosby Show and others.

Their claim of catering to an "upscale" audience is plan goofy! Upscale is certainly not toilet-fodder sex jokes. Can you imagine this: NBC will move Will & Grace to 7:00 if Friends is not renewed. That's the family hour. NBC might as well be called FOX 2.

About the only good sitcom left on NBC is Frasier, a spinoff of Cheers.

Hmmm......Yeah your are right. The Johnsons watch NBC shows every week. The family consits of a husband and a wife, they have one 11 year old boy, one 7 year girl, and one 5 year boy. Every week they all watch Friends together despite talk about porn. They also watch Law and Order even though there is bad language and other topics not for children.

I'm not saying the shows are bad, but they are definitely not family. G rated family sitcoms are over......They still have family sitcoms, but they aren't for all the kids.

NBC isn't suppose to be G-rated. If you want G-Rated watch ABC Family, N@N, TV Land, Pax TV, but as for me, I want my NBC!!

Family sitcoms are still going strong in a way, though they are more PG then ever lol. "My Wife and Kids" is the highest rated sitcom on ABC, and "According to Jim" is another high rated family show. "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Yes, Dear" are two more I can think of.

Exactly what HBO/Showtime shows these 2 future NBC sitcoms will be based on?

Granted a lot of the shows on these 2 cable nets feature a lot of great acting and are well done but a lot of these shows do feature a lot of foul language, nudity, violence,ect... OZ for example is a good show but I cant see it ( or a show like it ) say on a regular broadcast network like NBC.

True there IS a lot of foul language on tv today and its a shame but the so-called "F" word is still taboo on tv ( except on HBO, Showtime and the other movie channels ). Same thing with nudity.

Should be interesting to see how NBC's new shows will duplicate some of the shows on HBO & Showtime when they wont be able to do some of the things their cable competition can. Maybe NBC should look into starting a cable network like Fox did with FX and Viacom has with HBO. This way they can do the more "adult" shows and even experiment somewhat as ratings for cable channels arent nearly as important as they are for the broadcast channels.

With all of the favorable ratings shows like "My Wife And Kids" and "According To Jim" are getting for ABC, as well as shows like "Bernie Mac" and "Raymond" for FOX and CBS, respectively, it won't be long before NBC has a few family sitcoms in the works again.
Thre is no doubt that the big three networks are feeling some pressure to emulate the risque material on HBO and Showtime, because the cable programming is getting a lot of media attention.
Personally, I enjoy programming that is fresh and different than traditional fare, but with a big emphasis on ORIGINALITY, which on network Television, is a word that is hard to find.
