Why didn't Peter ever go to HS with Greg? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have been a BB fan since I watched the repeats when I was 4 years old on WPIX. (those in the Tri state area will know that channel). One thing I always found strange was that Greg graduated high school while Pete was still in Jr. high despite them supposedly being close in age. I know that in the 70's some high schools started at 10th grade instead of 9th like most schools but during the last season Peter was at least the age of a 10th grader.

Think about it Greg should be 18 in the last season since that's the age most people are when they're in the 12th grade. And Peter says in one episode he is only 2 years younger than Greg, I don't remember the title but the subplot was about Peter wanting to be a doctor when he got older. And in one scene he's talking to Mike and Carol about how Greg wanting to be an architect made him think about his own future career because "I'm only two years younger than Greg." So that would mean in season 5 he'd be 16 the age of the average 10th grader.

So shouldn't Greg, Marcia and Peter all have gone to high school together in the last season?

You're right Peter should have been in high school in the last season. But the producers liked to pair the kids so that Greg and Marcia were in High School together, Peter and Jan were in Junior High together, and Bobby and Cindy were in Grammer School together.

You are right. They certainly did like to pair the children up like that. This is probably the reason why Peter who was supposed to be in high school at the show's end was only in junior high.

Oh, and the episode you are talking about is from Season 4 entitled "Career Fever." Mike is under the false impression that Greg wants to be an architect like him, when he really didn't know what else to write about in his paper.

Oh yeah that was the name of the episode, thanks. I agree with what you guys have said, it does seem that for the most part they liked to keep the kids together with their other boy/girl age counterpart. Except when Greg went to high school by himself in season 2.

In the school district in my community, growing up, the 9th graders were with the 7th & 8th graders at the JR. high, even though they we're technically high-schoolers. Elementary was K-6.

So maybe when Peter was in 9th grade, he stayed at the Jr. High bldg.

Now-a-days, in most communities, Elementary is K-4; Jr. High 5-8; and 9th Grade is with grades 10-12 in the High School.

Also, I believe Peter was 2 years behind Marcia. Final Season:

Greg - Grade 12
Marcia - Grade 11
Peter - Grade 9
Jan - Grade 8
Bobby- Grade 6
Cindy - Grade 5

Yeah, when you think about it, shows have done this before. I just bought Boy Meets World Season 2 and on the premiere Corey goes into 7th grade at Junior High School. 6th, even 5th is considered "Junior High" especially in Catholic Schools....public 6th-8th is mostly junior now.

Where I grew up, in Massachusetts, we had K-5 as Elementary, 6-8 as Middle School/Junior High and then 9-12 as High School. If you went to Catholic School, 5th was also considered Junior High, since 5th graders changed classes with the 6th-8th graders for Math/History/Science and English.

However, some schools pre-1990 or so had K-6 as Elementary and some had K-8 and even others had 4-8 but high school was ALWAYS 9-12.

The school I went to in the late 1980s to early 1990s was K-5. It was a small school but had been used as 5 or 6 grades each year it was functioning as a school. Other huge schools in the city were K-8 and had big gyms, theatres, et. The smaller schools just had classes and junk for auditoriums.

So, yeah, maybe Peter was in 9th grade but the school he went to ended with grade 9 and then he'd transfer to a new school for 10-12.

Most likely on Brady Bunch K-6 was one school, then a school that went up to 9th grade (maybe began around 7th or maybe 6th but was in a different area than the previous school the kids went to), then 10-12th for high school.
