Default Debit Card Question

Tonight while I was out, my debit card did NOT work anywhere. All the banks are closed so I will have to wait until tommorow to talk to them.

I'm just curious, has this ever happened to anyone else?

Sometimes my checking account DOES go overdrawn, so I was worried MAYBE they shut it down, but wouldn't they notify you if they did such a thing?

And also I was nervouse, So, just now, I went on Ebay to order something with paypal which is linked to my checking account. I wanted to order something that just cost a dollar or 2 just to see if it would still work, so I ordered a pen, and it WENT TRHOUGH ok.

But has this ever happened to anyone?

Could it be the magnetic strip on the back of the card? Sometimes they go wonky. I hope it all works out.

Thanks and I HOPE that's all it is

I knew I'd get some input here. I tried posting this same thing at IMDB and just got a whole string of smart*ss remarks.

You can't have a discussion there.

yea dude, sounds as if the magnetic stripe isn't working. Also, check the expiration date on the card, although if the card's expired the bank should have sent you a new one.

You don't have online banking or any other way to check your balance? Or at least an ATM nearby?

Do you bank at a locally owned branch or a national one such as PNC or Wells-Fargo?

It's local and I tried to call in to the 24 hour line BUT that's messed up too, it said my ID was invalid, which further worried me that my account had been closed, BUT it said the same thing about my savings account, so MAYBE it's not, and I did still use it to buy a 3$ pen from ebay. Somethine funny is happening, I just hope nothing that's gonna mess me up lol

I use a debit card, it is so handy. But on this topic of debit cards, when the clerk asked you "do you want to use this as a debit or a credit", what do you say? I guess the term is POS. Point of Sale card. I always say debit for it is a debit card. Occasionally the debit transaction won't work according to the clerk and I will have the clerk use it as a credit. What is the difference? Some places I have to sign my name, when using it, some I don't. I use it a lot when buying gasoline. Either way I use it, I don't get charged. Thanks.

OK!!! I just found out what happened.

It turns out I'm MAJORLY overdrawn. I'm kinda scared right now.

I HAVE ordered stuff, but had no idea it was getting that low!!

So I have another question, when you order something and use Paypal, if your Paypal account in linked to your checking account, on Paypal when it says COMPLETE, when it says funds from bank COMPLETE, does that mean it's already pulled out what it needs?

I just hope other things don't keep CLEARING. I would stop payment on anything at this point.

I believe most banks charge a fee to stop payments. That could cost you more than the original amounts. The best thing is to sit down and balance your account on a sheet of paper. Figure out how much you money you need to settle things and deposit the money asap.

You can put it through as either a credit or a debit. You only need to put it through as a debit if you want cash back.

I hate to defend banks in the current climate, but they do have to make money somehow. I'd rather pay a flat annual fee for the use of a card than for the banks to gamble with my savings on the money markets and pretend I have free banking if I keep in credit. There's also the issue of spending money I haven't got, which is far easier to do with cards than drawing notes out of a dispenser, feeling them between your hands and watching what you pass over the counter as you budget for what you need as essentials and not spend lavishly on luxuries.
