Wasn't it the glue the professor was making for the broken camera lens? The pot making the glue exploded because of Gilligans screwup and got all over the castaways. They were chasing Gilligan into the hut where the feathers were being saved for Mr Howell and they fell into the feathers with the glue on them and wala!

Yes -- Gilligan had put the lid on the pot of glue. The feathers, if I remember right, were to be used to make pillows? As a gift to Mrs. Howell?
