Default "Substitute Father" Episode

I have two questions: 1) what was that "very bad word" Beaver said to that bully that got him into so much trouble; and 2) where was Hugh Beaumont when that episode was filmed?

1) Do you really think they're going to tell you? That's the whole idea of the bell ringing at the appropriate time, so you don't hear what it is. Gotta have a little mystery there, plus the censors wouldn't allow a bad word to be spoken.

2) I don't know.

I missed the part where that happened. I saw Miss Landers' reaction, and all the talk about the terrible word Beaver said, but no mention of what it was. I thought I missed something. Mrs. Brady once scolded one of her kids for saying "stinker." I figured it might be a similar offense from the days of antiseptic TV.

I think JudgeGarth hit the nail on the head with his answer to #1.

In those days, I tend to think it was a word that wasn't nice to say. Beaver might have said "You're a NITWIT. Saying that today would be no big deal.

I wasn't asking where Ward was, I was asking about Hugh Beaumont.

I read Hugh's ex-wife's book and the episode aired about the time that his mother in law had died from the accident his family had been in when his oldest son was driving the family out to California to see him. Many people confused it to be his mother and that it was early in the series when those are false misconceptions, according to her book. Alot also said that was why he resented the show for years, but really it was because he saw the "Ward" character as type-casting him and would make it harder for him to get other roles later. As I said, this all came from his ex-wife's book so I tend to believe that. I think Barbara also said the same thing, but she also added that he made peace with it later. Sorry, got off subject some. LOL! Hope this helps though.

Thank you. So it sounds like they wrote this script so Hugh Beaumont could take some time off to be with his family after a tragic event. This episode was on again tonight and it sort of felt like it could have been a quickly rewritten script that originally featured Hugh Beaumont prominently.
