When I was younger I was always fascinated by Granny's hair... Well I was fascinated about ANY hair, esp LONG hair put up in a bun.
But I used to always wonder, does ANYONE know how you would put hair up in a bun like Granny's was? Her hair seems to be in TWO buns, one on top of the other, but I'm wondering, would you seperate the hair and actualy MAKE 2 buns? OR is it the same piece of hair just twisted around twice. I know there is such thing as an "8 bun" and I know how to do that, but hers doesn't have that "swirve" going through it. The grandma from Flowers in the Attic wore an 8 bun. Again I know weird question, but I've always been curious. And yeah I KNOW it was a wig, but still how WOULD it be done if it were real? |

Many real-life grannies, including my own, used bobby pins and hairnets to hold their hair buns in place during the day. From what I've seen of Irene Ryan on the old "Betty White Show" (the variety show that replaced "A Date with the Angels"), her hair seemed to be thin and wiry.

I'm assuming Granny's hair was really a wig because Irene Ryan, off the set, looked like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2L45x3TDXQ Or was Irene Ryan's hair a wig and her Granny character's real? |

To everyone who responded, I know it was a wig ~as I stated in my OP~ I know how to hold a bun up with hairpins and bobby pins, my question is HOW would you make a bun like Granny had?

Irene was an elegant lady in real life. I got the impression Donna Douglas didn't want to be there.
