Exclamation Get a Flu Shot or Get Fired

Link

PINEHURST, N.C. (WTVD) -- Flu season is already here and experts said it's already shaping up to be a bad year.

Officials at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst are warning their employees to get a flu shot or be fired.

"We do feel that we are seeing a peak now and we do feel it's earlier than we normally see that," said Dr. Paul Jawanda.

This year getting a flu shot is mandatory for all 4,000 First Health employees. The policy is simple. No shot, no job. That may sound drastic, but Jawanda said First Health is serious about keeping hospital employees and patients from spreading the infection.

"Most people look at the flu as being a minor illness," said Jawanda. "Very rarely for someone previously healthy, it can be more than a minor illness and certainly for people in the hospital, who are dealing with other illnesses, if they are exposed to the flu that can really be a problem."

First Health joins a growing number of medical systems including UNC-Health Systems and Moses Cone Hospitals that require employees to be vaccinated.

Other medical facilities like Cape Fear Valley Medical System, don't require the vaccinations, but strongly recommend workers get the flu shot. In previous years, Cape Fear Valley has held mass inoculation clinic for employees.

First health officials say about 85 to 90 percent of the workers in its health system have already taken the shot or agreed to get one before the Dec. 31 deadline. They say for that other small group of people who, for whatever reason won't or can't take the shot, they will be required to wear paper masks as long as they are on the job.

And a First Health spokesperson said only a few employees have indicated they would quit rather than take the flu shot.

I know that hospital well, it's about 15 miles from where I live. Glad I don't work there though because I would probably be out pounding the pavement for not getting a flu shot.

Oh No

I know of people who had allergic reactions to flu shots. Apparently, the higher ups at this hospital hasn't taken that possibility into consideration.

Exactly, everyone reacts to medication or vaccinations differently. Just because one person has no side-effects from it is no sign the next one won't. If it could be proven that the flu shot is 100% safe then I would get one myself. It's also not 100% effective in preventing the flu as I have known at least 3 people who have gotten it after receiving the shot.

On the other hand, for someone with a compromised
immune system(such as a person with HIV), influenza
can be a problem.

That's true some people can have a terrible reaction to vaccinations.

Also, there are people, like myself, who have a huge fear of needles. Having to get a shot brings on a severe panic reaction from me. I can certainly understand some people not wanting to get the shot. I understand it's a good idea to, but some people are really scared and I don't think they should be fired.

You and me both, Jenny. Blood tests are a nightmare for me. I've nearly fainted more than once when I needed to have blood drawn.

You hit the nail right on the head, Charles. What if the vaccine had penicillin or sulfa in it? I'm allergic to both. If I worked there, would I be fired for that?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for taking extra precautions (sanitizer, rubber gloves, face masks, etc.). I just think these people are taking things too far and abusing their power.

I don't think anyone with a severe phobia of needles is going to be working in a hospital.

Also, if you can't handle what the business/company policy is then don't work there.

The first and only flu shot that I got made me very ill. I think that the shot is a waste of time because there are so many different strains of Flu. The shot may not even prevent the right one! I'll take my chances

Bingo! I'm sure in this economy there are hundreds of qualified applicants who would be glad to have a job--even if it comes with a FREE flu shot!
