I'm not even referring to pop-up advertisements which is a seperate problem.--Take a channel like ESPN being one example where the bottom of the screen is covered with text (or whatever you call it).Not to mention the screen is often cluttered on the sides too. I much prefer the good old fashioned 'clean screen'. Am I the only one that finds this not only distracting but annoying? It also looks rediculous in my opinion.

i hate those with a passion - my local stations have a tendency to do that all the time, I can understand when there is something important like an election, a real weather emergency, or an amber alert or something, but they do it for highschool football scores, reminders about what time the 11:00 news is going to be on tonight, and full ridiculously overcomprehensive weather data anytime there is a stiff breeze in the next state over.

One of the more frustrating networks is GMC. The logo isn't even transparent, and it always has all kind of text beside it. It was irritating last night when I was watching Family Ties.
TNT and TBS are great with their bugs. Small and transparent, with no text around them, at least not at this moment. My local ABC affiliate runs a ticker at the bottom during the news with stock quotes, news headlines, etc. - so cluttery and distracting. |

Yes,that's what I meant a 'ticker' at the bottom of the screen as you mentioned clj2.I did not know what that thing was called. And of course for the most part you never saw that type of stuff on TV screens 15+ years ago.

What did we do in the days where the half-hour shows ran 22-25 minutes and there was not even a station logo on the screen? Now our senses are constantly bombarded.

The tickers started with the cable news channels during 9/11 coverage (I believe Fox was first, and CNN and the then-centrist news channel MSNBC immediately followed suit). The tickers haven't stopped polluting out airwaves since.
I, too, miss the days when television networks felt secure enough to not have to plaster their logo and other annoying junk on the screen 24/7. The only national network I can think of that still doesn't engage in this practice is HBO. |

Yes those are annoying. ESPN2 started with their Constant "Bottom Line" Ticker in 1995 thats the first I remember. ESPN used to do it but only at 28 & 58 past the Hour.

It's annoying trying to watch a NFL or NBA game on ESPN and have to see scores scrolling at the bottom of the screen.
You see the same thing on CBS on NFL Sundays. |

You guys are hitting the nail on the head here!!
I remember when ESPN would have updates at 28 and 58 mins. past the hour. I remember when CBS used to have the "10 minute ticker" instead of having constant scores and god forbid they dont have there precious fantasy leaders. How about the annoying pop-up ads on the bottom of the screens? Is that what your also talking about? If you are, how about the pop-up ads that make noise or take up a part of the screen? How about no end credits on tv shows? Or how about the new one which is showing the end credits of one show on the left side of the screen and then the beginning of a new show on the right side of the screen? Whats that about? |

I was wondering just how long the crawl lines have been at the bottom of the screen. Did someone say shortly after Sept 11-2011. . I suppose the younger generation have never seen the screens like some of did 30 years ago. I did read last night on the crawl line that George Bush #39 has been hospitalized with a lung problem. So some things are interesting.

To me it's very distracting to have all the stuff on the bottom and sides while shows are on but it seems to only get worse.

Another thing they do these days at least in tennis is they keep the score constantly on the screen, with the numbers so small it's hard to read it.Yet it takes up a lot more space.---Before the late 1990s,when they used to cover tennis, they did it a lot better.Often would they would just flash the score for a few seconds mostly when the points changed, the numbers were clear, bigger and easy to see......And I won't even go into the superior camera work on the older matches.
