HBO, AMC, Showtime to Televise Sandy Concert
The Dec. 12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden will have a TV audience as well.
HBO, AMC, Showtime and Sundance Channel are just four of the domestic networks that will televise the show aimed to serve as a benefit to the victims of the vicious storm that caused tumultuous damage on the East Coast several weeks ago. Other details of which networks will air the concert are still being worked out, but several more are likely to be added on. The show will be also be livestreamed by Hulu, Yahoo and AOL. Among the superstar acts scheduled to appear on stage are Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Who, Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder have just been added to the lineup. Show is expected to last somewhere in the four-hour range. There is a strong international component as well, with a TV reach in Asia, Europe and Africa. DirecTV's offshoots in Italy and Brazil are televising the concert, as as well Sundance Channel Europe and Sky 1 in Italy. Proceeds will benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which is an offshoot of the Gotham-based philanthropic Robin Hood Foundation. Cablevision topper James Dolan, Clear Channel President John Sykes, and Harvey Weinstein are producing the concert. HBO has televised several concerts from Madison Square Garden in the past, including a benefit following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. For benefit shows and telethons, it is not uncommon for different networks to share TV rights. Clear Channel has all radio rights. Official announcement of TV partners will likely be made Wednesday. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118062698 |
