I have to say, I am really impressed with the accuracy of Ravi's Hindi. He always talks in Hindi when he's mad...especially at Jessie.
I know Karan Brar is Indian as well...obviously, lol, so he probably speaks some Hindi, if not fluently. But as a Hindi-speaker, I really appreciate that the show put in the effort into making the dialogue accurate. It also makes me so happy/proud that South Asians are getting more mainstream roles on TV!!!! Sure his role is stereotypical, but I still think this is a HUGE step forward for us South Asians!! Behind Good Luck Charlie, Jessie is my favorite current Disney Channel show. Any other fans out there?

I don't know that I would say "Jessie" is my favorite Disney show now, but I do enjoy it pretty well. And that is good to know that Ravi's Hindi is accurate. It is unfortunate that Ravi is a bit of a stereotypical role, but at least the show does make the point that he was fairly recently adopted into the family from India, so that would give him a reason to still have a strong Indian accent and have some trouble navigating American life working from an Indian cultural background.
And yes- it is good to see more Asians in leading roles on television. (I should amend that to say American television.) Just as there are many Caucasian Americans to say the least, as well as African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans, and some Native Americans as well- there are certainly a number of Asian-Americans too. And American television should represent all of the rich cultures that comprise the country. I'm sure the situation is quite different in other countries, particularly where different races are majorities and others minorities. (It's a natural thing for people of any country to think in terms of their own country, when of course there are differences all over the world. What I'm trying to say here is that sometimes in America, people associate "minority" with certain groups and forget about others. And also forget that in other countries that group may well be a majority and their own race a minority.) But of American television, it's hard to think of many Asian-background characters in prominent roles, though thankfully that has changed in recent times. Ravi on "Jessie" is a prime example. I believe the current show "Community" also has an Asian background character. (I'm not sure as I don't watch this one.) And of course, Pat Morita has portrayed a couple of Asian characters on TV- Arnold on "Happy Days" and he also had his own starring sitcom (although short-lived)- "Mr. T and Tina". (I've read that was actually the first show for American TV at least to have an Asian in the starring role.) |
