Yes, William Daniels is in fact alive, even though the character he was recently playing on Grey's Anatomy was killed off this week.

I just think it's pure irony that William Daniels who plays Mr. Feany was the Principal at John Adams High...and he played the character John Adams in "1776"!

That's why they named the school John Adams High, because of that. It's mentioned on the DVD commentary.
