Thumbs down 22 year Arby's employee is fired after fleeing armed robber

(CBS) FAIRBORN, Ohio - Mary Archer, who worked at an Arby's restaurant in southwest Ohio for the past 22 years, was fired after she fled an armed robber at the restaurant early last Friday morning, CBS affiliate WHIO reports.

According to the station, the 56-year-old was alone at the Fairborn Arby's when an armed robber came in and demanded money.

"He held up a knife and kept saying, 'Give me the money,'" the former assistant manager told the station.

Archer says she was able to push away the robber and escape through the drive-through window.

"I had pushed him away...because I'm like, 'I'm not going to die in Arby's tonight ... I'm just not,'" she told WHIO.

According to the station, Archer was fired less than 24 hours later for violating the company's safety and security police by being alone in the restaurant.

Archer said she was closing the business for the day and a co-worker had just left when she heard the doorbell to the business. She thought it was the co-worker, who perhaps had forgotten something, but it was the knife-wielding man instead.

Arby's said violations of its safety and security policy mean termination of employment without exception.

A human resources official with Arby's told WHIO says he says he feels bad that Archer had to go through this, but that she knowingly violated the company's safety and security policy, and had been warned before.

"I don't want my job back," she said, noting that January would mark her 23rd year with Arby's.

It's reportedly the third time in the past six months that this particular Arby's had been robbed. Fairborn police are still looking for the robber.

Instead of firing employees for being robbed, maybe they should make sure the store doesn't get robbed. 3 times in 6 months? That's crazy

I worked in customer service for many years and we were always trained to co-operate with a robber. Give then what they what they want and get them out as quickly as you can. Because the longer they're around the more nervous they will get and the greater the chance they will use whatever weapon they're weilding. I did exactly that each of the three times I experienced a robbery and was commened by my bosses each time for correctly handling the situation.

A cousin of mine had the opposite happen to her. She was working at a bank and an armed robber came in demanding money. She gave him the money and was then promptly fired for not pushing a button that would have alerted the police. Sorry, but if an armed robber came into the store I was working at and I had no way to defend myself, I'm going to do what he says.

Sure, you can replace people, especially when they are in danger in the presence of an armed robber.

Who's going to want to take her job? I wouldn't want to work in a place that is constantly robbed

That's probably why she doesn't care if she goes back there or not. Three is enough.

The thing is, why was she at the restaurant alone?

They need to fix their scheduling if that is the case.

Yeah, when my siblings worked at Subway in their teens, they were often the only ones there at night. In fact, my brother, who was 16 at the time, quit after one night when a customer threatened him. My parents were furious that the management left a minor all by himself at night to deal with a frightening situation. It was ugly.

apparently she was in the process of closing the restaurant and had just let out the last employee and was going to go back in and set the alarm/lock-up etc.

- around here (I don't live all that far away from this), once word gets out that a place is an easy target, it will get hit multiple times; the Rally's down the street has been robbed 5 or 6 times in the past 6 months because there is always only one person in there at night and its a drive-through on a major street.

apparently that Arby's hasn't done anything to improve their outside security since the robberies started; they could improve lighting, add outside cameras and maybe even hire a security guard just to come by when they close up at night. A couple of weeks ago the Wendy's near us got hit the exact same way - right after closing as the manager was locking the door (which I don't see what the difference was - SOMEONE has to be the last person out of the building at night), they have changed their procedures at night, changed the door, added cameras and they certainly didn't fire anyone.

Ridiculous!

Arby's needs to change it's safety and security policy!

And how was she to know that a robbery was about to happen? How?
