Warner Bros. Takes Home Video Rights for Friday the 13th Series

Today kicked off on a promising note when a friend of Shock tweeted a rumor about Warner Bros. Home Entertainment acquiring the DVD/Blu-ray rights to the Friday the 13th franchise.

It appears that rumor is now fact: Paramount has indeed sold the rights to Jason Voorhees' exploits as part of a recent package deal in which WBHE picked up over 600 titles from Paramount's library.



What does that mean for you? We'll see re-releases of all Friday titles and, now, perhaps a box set that includes the entire series.

This was impossible before because Warner Bros./New Line separate owned the home video rights to Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th (2009).



Now that all of the titles are under one roof, I'm certain a new box set is being considered. How much care WBHE will put into these re-releases is to be determined.

Matt Serafini over at Dread Central has done some ace detective work in regard to a potential Friday the 13th Blu-ray Box-set.

It all went down at the WB Shop Facebook Page and started back in February when the admin there noted, “there should be some news for Jason fans later in the year.” Then, on Tuesday, another fan followed up saying they wanted “Friday The 13th 1-8 On Blu Ray for Christmas.”

The shop’s official reply? “You might get that and more if Santa is good to ya.”


It’s worth noting that now WB owns the home video rights for all 12 Jason films.

It’s Official!! All 12 Friday the 13th Movies in One Blu-ray Box!!

Last week we reported that it seemed like all 12 Friday the 13th films would collected in a Blu-ray box set via Warner Bros. And today that has been confirmed!

All 12 films will be stretched across 10 discs, with 7 movies hitting the hi-def format for the first time. There will also be a bonus blu-ray disc dedicated to special features and a 40 page companion book of highlights culled from Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories.

On September 13th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will provide plenty of blood-curdling thrills when Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection debuts on Blu-ray.

For the first time, all twelve Friday the 13th films will be packaged together, (with seven of them making Blu-ray debuts) as a result of a strategic distribution alliance between Paramount and Warner announced last fall, granting Warner exclusive video distribution rights to over 600 Paramount titles.

The set also includes a Friday the 13th Killer Extras Bonus DVD.



This intense ‘slasher’ series is one of the longest-running and most successful horror franchises in film history, surpassing the domestic theatrical box-office grosses of such legendary series as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The film that turned psycho killer Jason Voorhees and his infamous hockey mask into a pop culture icon has also bested the horror competition as the #1 home entertainment seller, with total sales of $119.7M to date.



The 10-disc collection ($129.95 SRP) includes the twelve films on nine Blu-ray discs, as well as a killer DVD bonus disc full of special features on the making of the famous franchise.

The must-own set will be presented in a collectible tin case with 11 hours of previously released special features and a 40-page soft cover book. The book is excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th, a fan-favorite volume that’s viewed as the ultimate memoir of the series, and highlights some of the 200 interviews, 600 photos, storyboards, concept art and more.

Also included is a brand new, official Camp Crystal Lake embroidered Counselor Patch.



Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection also includes digital versions of all 12 films with UltraViolet, allowing viewers to download and instantly stream the films to a wide range of devices from computers and compatible tablets to smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.

So James, how do you explain Universal leaving out the first Child's Play film in the franchise (a United Artists release) from boxsets, in contrast to Warner releasing all FT13th movies, including the Paramount ones?

Simple, Paramount sold the Friday rights to Warner Bros., whereas UA still holds the rights to the original Child's Play.


Similar things have happened w/ other franchises, like Puppet Master. Back in the 1980s, Full Moon had a deal where Paramount would release Full Moon's direct-to-video titles. They made 5 Puppet Master films under this arrangement.

Paramount split from Full Moon sometime in the mid-to-late '90s, but they still owned the video distribution rights to the first 5 Puppet Master films. Paramount finally gave up the rights in the late 2000s and Full Moon was finally able to officially release them.

A new Blu-ray box set coming out on October 8th will include all of the Chucky films.
