Florida should have stayed on this show

She was so good and had so much in common with Maude. It's a shame that Norman Lear took her off the show because she was very funny. The show probably could have stayed in the top 10 if they left Florida on the show

I liked Florida on the show. I really only liked the first two seasons because of Esther Rolle. However, I started to watch the other eps and really like them as well. If fact, Florida is referenced to in the season five finale when Maude is trying to find a new maid. I thought that it was nice that they remembered her.

It was a 1978 episode. Maude wanted to find a maid as strong willed as Florida. Maude used her as an example as to the type of black maid she specifically wanted. I enjoyed the episode. Roscoe Lee Browne plays Victoria's father on two episodes. They were good episodes.

I found it on youtube. I posted a thread about it because it was funny how Maude explained why she wanted a black maid and Walter's response

Mrs. Naugatuck is my favorite character after Maude. I liked her back during the original run and still do. I liked Florida, but I think there is a more vibrant chemistry between Maude and Mrs. Naugatuck, who was a truly unique and eccentric character. I'm finding seasons 3-5 are my favorite, and a lot of that has to do with Mrs. Naugatuck, plus Vivian, who evolved into a more interesting and funny character (she was sort of bland in the beginning). I'm not too crazy about the first couple seasons or the last.

With Florida, Liberal Maude was always careful to treat her as an equal because she was black; since Mrs. Naugatuck was white, Maude was free to be more combative and IMO this made for much better comedy as Maude could openly express her disgust without feeling guilty (if Mrs N. had been a minority it would not have worked).

Edith Bunker always treated Louise Jefferson with sincere admiration and respect. There was never an ulterior motive with Edith. She was always honest, kind and caring. Edith and Louise were TRUE friends.
Maude sometimes pandered to Florida because she was black. That's NOT how Edith Bunker was AT ALL.
