The original plan for the James Evans character in season 4 was to have him..........
working out at the Alaska pipeline because he lost his job in Chicago. This was mentioned in a article a month after season 3 ended. I think this would have been better which would have left the door open for a possible return

I agree. Even if he never appeared on the show again having him alive would have been better than killing him off. For what it's worth at least they killed him off instead of saying he deserted the family and left town or something, that would have been awful.

But that kinda wouldn't make sense because James would have had to be gone for 2 years. That wouldn't be realistic for a father to be away from home for 2 years and never come home to visit, and the family is still living in the projects.
