Default Will Facebook Doom Forums?

I've noticed more and more websites that previously had discussion forums are just going toward using their Facebook pages to allow members to interact with each other. How does everyone feel about this?

Personally, I like forums. With Facebook, you have to "friend" the person or at least "like" the page in order to participate and I don't always want to open myself up like that to entities I don't really know. Also, I think the very physical presentation of Facebook makes discussions harder to archive and refer back to (and I loathe the "timeline" nonsense).

I just hope that this trend doesn't completely doom forums like this one. I've noticed a lot of older members aren't present here much anymore, and my guess is that they're over at Facebook more. That's cool, but I hope there's still room for forums like this one. I think in general there's a lot less silly narcissism in forums such as SO than there is on FB, and I just feel more at home here.

I prefer forums over Facebook. Sitcoms Online is an old and trusted friend and I still prefer it over Facebook (which I am getting bored with!)Forums offer the opportunity to meet people from all over the country(or world in some cases) I have had the pleasure of meeting, though not in person, a lot of cool people on the forums. I have been on SO for over 10 years and I still look forward to visiting everyday!

Cool

I agree with you guys. Forums are easier to navigate in terms of an ongoing discussion than a Facebook page. This particular forum, Sitcoms Online, has a special place in my heart because it's where I met you two and so many other good online friends! I hope it will always be here!!

I hear that some people have left forum sites, this wasn't the first time this was talked about. I'm a member of inthe00s.com, and they asked "Are Forum Sites Fading Away" and one said "Whatever happened to me"...but then someone said "I wish I wasn't on there because he bitches about his parents"!

Aren't the ones you complain are the one you love the most?

And one site that I blog called bcdb.com...I see that I'm on there more than other members.

Is the forum site fading away?

But still...no matter what...I'll remain here!

Facebook is a fad, primed to become the next MySpace - the stock value is already half of what the IPO was.

Forums basically have been around since before the internet in the form of bulletin boards. while the day-to-day numbers might be down overall, I think they will bounce back

- especially when Facebook starts becoming even more aggressive with its advertising, selling members' information and material, and continues with the constant changes and increasing complexity and unusability.

I hate the timeline over at FB. It's just easier for me to post on forums like SO. Although I belong to a few though, this one is still the only forum I post on a lot. lol

Facebook may be a fad (it's already fading a little I think), but social networking is not. And I think it's already affecting forums a little. They're certainly not as big as they were 5-10 years ago before social networking was really huge.

But I think there will always be a use for forums, they serve a little bit of a different purpose than social media. A lot of sites have comment boards now where you can connect it with your Facebook (or Twitter) account, maybe that's the future of forums.

I see Facebook and SO as two very different things that I keep separate and hope to always have them separate. I see Facebook as a way to keep up with people I know and forums to share my interests with others that have the same interests without spamming people's feeds with my opinions

I'm not a member of that dumbass facebook and it will eventually die off like myspace has.

I'm a member of several forums though and they rule over facebarf!

It already has, there are some members of S.O. who are more active on Facebook than they are on here.

That why the TV Land message boards couldn't survive anymore

I doubt it because Myspace was never as popular as facebook. When did you ever see a TV station with a myspace address? People are still addicted to FB like they were in sept of 2011 and I have not see any signs of slow activity on FB
