Because of how she was featured in the eps from seasons 1 to 5. When you think about it, the eps revolved around her or Jack or Both at the same time. Janet was always the one with the minor role but the Jack and Chrissy characters were heavily featured in most eps.
So when they feature you that way how can you not think you are responsible for the show being number 1 when you have a LARGE ROLE on the show? It's no way Joyce Dewitt could have ever felt she was in position to ask for more money because she wasn't featured as much as Suzanne on the show. Do you agree or Disagree? |

Suzanne Sommers and John Ritter definitely had some amazing chemistry. I don't know if you ever saw the original pilot with some other blonde playing Chrissy Snow. Anyhow, it was EXACTLY the same episode (line for line) as the first show, but this chick had ZERO chemistry with John. When John and Suzanne played off each other, they were beyond amazing. It was all there with the two of them, and it all seemed to come so natural.

Next to John Ritter, Suzanne was the biggest star of TC at the time. She was featured everywhere. There's no doubt she was a large part of why it was successful. She however was not in the Alan Alda, Carroll O'Connor class which is what she thought she was. I think it all went to her head and she thought she couldn't be replaced. The producer's obviously felt that any sexy blonde could replace her and that's what they did. Joyce could have been replaced too. The only one that couldn't was John. If he would have left, the show would have been over.

But I guess that since she was making the same thing as Joyce and had a bigger role, that's why she asked for a increase. John Ritter didn't need to ask for a raise because he was already making the most money. So Suzanne was like....."wait, I'm always featured with John on every other ep or the episode is about me and I'm getting paid like a minor character? And on top of it the show is number 1 and I can't get a increase??
"Oh hell no, I want my money and I want it now"

I think it just went to her head. I think the producers played hardball. I think Joyce & John were innocent bystanders who got angry because all of this threatened their show which was the #2 rated show at the time. It was all so Unnecessary. Suzanne could have made that money in other ways by the amount of public appearances she did because of the show. She just about got blackballed from network tv for most of the 1980's and ended up doing appearances in Vegas.

I know I bring this up a lot, but it's interesting how in the British original the Janet character was given more time and story lines and the Chrissy character was an afterthought (even more so than Janet was in Three's Company). I'll always wonder why the Three's Company producers copied so much word for word from Man About the House but switched that aspect around.

Whatever the reason was for Suzanne asking for more money, I'm glad she did.
Chrissy was ruining the show for me when TC dumbed her down. It is to the point that episodes in seasons 3 or 4 that revolve around Chrissy, I skip. One she left, the plots got better. Some of Jack's better plots were in Season 5. |

There was no doubt that John was the talent, which became more apparent after Suzanne left. He took it up another level in seasons 5-8.

Some of the better plots from Season 5 that I am referring to are:
1. Jack pretends he can ski 2. Jack is a busboy, his roomates think he is the head chef 3. Jack pretends to be chef ? Miller Also one of Janet's better plots was from Season 5 - the one where her parents think she is married to Jack. |

All good episodes, especially the skiing one, Downhill Chaser. Another hot guest star was on that episode, Laurette Spang. |
