What will happen first..........Season 5 DVD or Syndication?? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I think there is a chance the show may end up on Digital TV at some point in the future like Me-TV since MTM already is on the channel. Season 5 DVD doesn't look like it will ever happen so I have my fingers crossed for the show to appear on some digital channel so I can see season 5, edited or not

I'd definitely bet on syndication first. Fox apparently isn't nearly as tightfisted about syndication as they are with home video distribution.

Shoutfactory.com had the nerve to promote the Rhoda DVD the other night while the series is still INCOMPLETE on DVD

Yeah I saw that ad on MeTV. I actually thought it was a well-played move by Shout! I've been clamoring for someone like them or MPI to actually advertise their classic TV DVDs on one of these networks. I really don't blame them for including Rhoda in the ad - afterall they still hold the license for seasons 1-4.

There was quite a bit of speculation about relations with Fox going south since Shout! hasn't acquired any new Fox licenses and outright stopped Rhoda in progress. I can totally imagine Fox (who can't even get their act together on self-releasing their catalog shows) having outlandish pricetags with their licenses. I know the Rhoda DVDs haven't sold too well so you can't blame Shout! for not wanting to lose money by overpaying for the license.

At the end of the day, the joke is on Fox for not releasing or licensing the majority of their back catalog, including several MTM properties and some of the best sitcoms in history.

They had to be selling well since 4 seasons were released out of 5. Not like it was only season that was released like Maude or Welcome Back kotter.

So some of those seasons had to sell well to generate the next release

Yes but Maude and Welcome Back, Kotter were "self-released" through Sony and Warner respectively. Rhoda, like all of Shout's catalog, is a licensing deal in which they must purchase rights off the distributor (in this case Fox). Since sales of nearly all catalog TV series gradually drop off with each subsequent volume/season release, the overhead must shrink too to continue making profits. With some shows it's immediately evident they don't sell well enough and therefor they only get one release before it's stopped. Other shows may take longer for sales to drop off before it becomes unprofitable.

Nobody who believes in a free market economy can fault Shout! for wanting to be a successful company. Since they have a stellar reputation when it comes to completing series and all of a sudden stopped picking up Fox properties, it's wiser to blame Fox who has a poor track record in such matters.

I've come to accept that RHODA is done on DVD. So if we do see a release of S5 I will take it as a nice surprise. I have them all on VHS and can transfer them someday when I've run out of things to watch, but that won't be for a long time.

Well I would love to be able to see the 13 eps of season 5 so I can be done with the series. I can transfer season 5 eps for you or send you blank DVD's to transfer season 5 eps for me

Get someone in Canada to record them from Comedy Gold? They air near uncut there, well same masters as DVDs except season 1 is remastered (except the wedding), but all run 25+ minutes.

I'm not really concerned about season 5 being uncut. I just want to see the last 13 eps of the show since I watched the first 4 seasons.

Now that I think about it, it was kind of stupid to buy 3 seasons on DVD after watching season 1 on youtube because it still leaves me with wanting to see the last 13 eps

I should have just watched season 1 on youtube and then waited for

a Season 5 DVD release so i could watched the remaining seasons

OR

For a digital TV channel to pick up the show
